Vitara / Escudo low-ratio diffs?

Post by lneil »

Can anyone help with info on lower ratio diffs for an escudo? I know a US company used to make 5.83's but there don't seem to be any around. The standard 5.12's are just a bit too tall. Alternatively, what is the availability and approximate cost of putting low-ratio transfer case gearing in? Any info' at all much appreciated.

Yep, pretty much all of them. I'll try the odd ones that are new to me shortly. The closest I've got so far is Calmini saying they are "gunna" put them back into production "sometime in the future". I'm not holding my breath.

Cant remember which, but one or more of those sites was specialling transfer case gears for the sidekick (Escudo/Vitara to us).
Have a dig around, it was on the home page of the applicable site from memory

Thanks Vando, will do. I was hoping for the ring & pinion set as the first option, but only because I could save a few bucks by then using the old 5.12 R&P s out of the manual in the new truck, which is an auto, and so is running the standard higher ratio diffs.

Sorry but you are plain out of luck right now - Calmini is the only company that supplies the 5.83 r&p's and they are not currently in production and who knows when they will be again. The transfer gears sets offered by ALL vendors does not have a high range reduction so no luck there either.

Trust me I know because I have been looking into this myself.

Your only option is to do a twin transfer box set-up using a SJ case in the back but it is heaps of work and you need to be running at least 33's and 4.56 r&p's at most.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news :?

Thanks Zeus, I'll just go and have a quiet little weep. If you hear any good news make sure to post for all us desperate scud owners.
