I have one you can have for free if you pay freight. Its minus the vacuum pump on the back which you can swap over from yours. Its been through mud but a good clean out and should be good. Let me know if ya want it.

Check its not the blue relay in the fuse box under the bonnet... if that relay goes dodgy then the charge circuit doesn't go... which also means lights all over the dash and no heater...

Its a common intermittent fault in early bighorns

They are about $25ish from an auto sparky to replace...

Its common for them to go intermittent and get slowly worse... If it happens again, find the relay and give it a few taps with something hard... see if it fixes it... if it does then go buy a new relay - if not... ummm... go buy a new alternator :P lol... or check fuses, links etc...

I discovered with my bighorn that sometimes the brushes can sometime stick if they get a bit of grit in there that stops them making contact with the armature, could also be a sign that your brushes are getting a bit worn too  though they are cheap @ about $3-4 each + labour to fix

I would also sometimes get my fuel light etc coming on when the belt was wet, causing it to slip on the pulley... it would come right though after a few good revs
