Pajero...which one?

Hi all

I've been reading for a few years now but now has come the time to ask a question or 2...

I'm considering a SWB Pajero and want advice/opinions on what people think are the pros/cons.
Auto or Manual?
2.8TD/3.0V6/3.5V6??

What's the fuel economy like on the petrols?
How does the diesel perform compared to the I/C 1KZ-TE?

Hi,

Fuel economy. No Petrol 2 ton 4x4 is wonderful. I have a 3.5 DOHC and do bugger all km's (5000/yr) so petrol consumption isn't a worry. I'd say between 12 & 16 litres/ 100km on road and 16 to 20 off road. Prob average about 14 or 15 on and off road.

3.0's are a bit cheaper than 3.5's but the motors are quite different, they both go well and have good torque for off road but the 3.5 SWB manual is awesome down low and can fly when req'd.

Diesel is better economy wise. 2.8's go well and have basically the same power & torque figures as the 1KZ. Make sure it has had regular servicing Like any early 90's diesel I guess.

Safari is better off road but not in the same league on road.

Check out the Rallywoods threads from last weekend. we had a SWB( red one ) out from foxton, and it was great. Maybe PM Sadam, as he had a good yarn to them about the wagon. I was impressed with how it went.

the petrols are thirsty, have good power tho the soft top has a factory locker in it. As a daily driver I would go to a diesel as a weekend truck or a second vehicle then the petrol would be the go.

the diesels are okay as long as well serviced get a leakdown test and do regular maintanance they go well for what they are but they are not a toyota :twisted:

ctualy they have very few mechanical issues if well looked after but the petrols are the best if you plan on towing anything, they are a bit hard to figure out what you can grab form earlier or later years as they kept swapping stuff around.

i have the 91'2.5td swb maual it it has the front and rear diff locks with the lowe range gear box and the ajustable body hight...60 dollars gives me bout 550km. but they are a biatch to start on cold mornings and they are kinda gutless at time.just my 10c

Front diff lock.... :shock:

Have you checked your glow plugs? They can be a bit hard to get going when starting if a bit past it.

or maybe it hubs? i probably got it all wrong.sorry.yeh i got new glow plugs down i mean its not like i gotta stand around for ages getting it going but it takes u know 2-3 tries, then pop shes going in a nice big cloud of smoke! :lol:

Most I have talked too find the diesels take a bit longer to warm up. I think its just the nature of the beast.
Ive been told if its not the glow plugs themselves, it could be the glow plug circuit powering the array.
I still have an issue with mine dying randomly when cold, however Im confident if i just do the glows I should be fine

I have a 2.8td and I really like it. Goes fairly well and seems like it will be quite capable offroad. I think for me the diesel was more desirable for me, since I do less kms and the economy is great, even considering RUC.
Most friends of mine are impressed with the bang for buck that I got with my SWB Paj. 4.5k for a manual SWB, magic

Mine is sadly a little more base than some, no rear locker, no heated mirrors, lots of little plastic hole plugs inside. no sunroof. shes still a nice truck. Cant miss what you dont have...
