Birthday treat

Post by Jase »

Hi guys, this is my first new post so I hope it works!

Haven't been a member of the site for log, but have been reading a lot of the posts lately and picking up some really good info and tips! :D Thanks guys

I recently almost replaced my 1990 Surf, but when I broke down how much the mods owed me I worked out that I needed to keep it for a least another 50 years to get my moneys worth!

So instead of selling it, I decided to give the old girl a birthday treat and go the whole hog on the mods, which brings me to the reason for this post...

While in Chch last weekend i brought a set of Superwinch manual hubs :P , carted them home to Central, opened the box, and promptly found the note that told me I also need to by 2 spindle nuts and 2 spindle washers, available from any Toyota dealer  But a week later I've had those parts ordered in and now I think I'm ready to go.

The hubs came with an instruction sheet which seems reasonably straight forward, but does anyone have any words of wisdom before I preform open heart surgery on my hubs? would certainly be appreciated.

PS. Cheers for the cool 8) site!

Go buy some waterproof marine grease.... I've had to re-grease them regulary until this suggestion came up... well worth doing, also have just been to get some gasket sealant and will be using that to seal the damn things, which will hopefully keep all the water out and save me having to take them to bits after the wet trips...

If you do end up having to re-grease them regularly soak them in petrol overnight before re-greasing, will get rid of all the crap...

Thanks Bill - will do.

So their claim that the hubs are perminantly lubricated is a bit of a stretch then? or are we just not supposed to get them wet

Put the hubs on yesterday and didn't have any trouble. I need to take them off again though to put some spring washers under the nuts which I didn't have. (the washers, not the nuts  )... so I'll change the grease then.

I didn't end up replacing the spindle nuts or washers either. The ones that were on there were identical and looked fine so I didn't see any sense in buggering around with them (plus I didn't have a socket big enough!). Is this likely to cause me a mischief?
