Yes and no. The gearbox will likely be different as an 84 will probably be a 2.4 diesel with a G52 box and the 88 will probably be a 2.4 turbo diesel with a W56 box. The box and T/C complete are interchangeable between the 2 with the dimensions, mountings and output flanges in the same places, it just requires a small trim around the transmission tunnel due to levers in different places. But to change just the T/C's you will need to muck around with the levers.
The G52 has both levers on one plate, and uses push-rods to actuate the 4WD/2WD and hi/lo where the W56 box has the lever straight into it on a separate plate.
