question for saftey freaks/experts..

before you tell me i can't do it, to late! well good or bad i ended up having to tow a mate back from out of town (about 30mins) with one of my snatch straps, question is will it be stuffed i no they are not meant for lifting or towing?

nah it was tight all the time, guess a visual inspection should do it, just thought it best to ask, i've got a few anyway and i usually snatch with the bigger one so not to worried

i can´t see any problem with it you won´t be putting anywhere near the forces on it that it is designed to handle and in someways you are putting less stress on your vehicle because of the stretch in the strap

only issue i can see is making sure you don´t drag it on the ground and ruin it that way

yea but when you snatch you give a good pull and it allows its self to retract, im pretty sure if i hung a 500kg weight from it for 30 mins and then tried to snatch with it that i would find it no longer had any stretch

These are wicked little tow ropes, hold 5 ton which is more than two vehicles combined! for 16 bucks you cant go wrong. Very handy for short pulls (pull not snatch). some people think you shouldn't use them as they arnt rated to 8000kgs but come on your tow hooks are only rated to 4 or so ton!

yea they look nice might grab one, do you reckon thats long enough for open road towing, i decided to use my 6m snatchmaster, the 3m seemed far to short for the brakes my mate has, and obviously the 10 was to long, towing was great with the small amount of stretch made things very smooth

The law states a tow rope is not allowed to be longer than 4m hence why they are 3.75m long, an official tow rope. Use these instead of destroying your precious snatch straps which are considerably more expensive to replace and illegal to tow with.

ah really, i had a feeling that it was something like that, thanks heaps for the help, maybe ill donate the 6mt used one to my mate who has no gear, and order a new one and tow rope at the same time.

done and done, made my order. its lucky i've got a surf and not something swb, carry so much friggen gear around my boot is rapidly filling up.

Just bought one of them tow ropes and a 9mtr snatch strap plus two tow hooks the other day, just waiting for them to turn up.

its lucky you dont have a nissan then you would have to have to carry twice as many parts that weigh three times as much. Instead of just gear

Back to the towing with a snatch strap.

Was told that the you only get so many pulls out of the strap before the kinetic energy creates lots of heat within the strap. If you just keep using it like you would when towing, it will permanantly deform and lose its stretch.

Jungle, do you mean like a duty cycle, i.e. 3-4 stretchs per hour, or finite stretch count, i.e. 100 stretchs an you throw it away?

I rang cookes and asked them this question. They didn't know of any limit and the manufactures blurb they have does not mention anything either.

Thinking about it though... if it stretches you would really want to let it relax again before you apply aother load to preserve the integrity of the webbing.

I would like to know what others think or know about this.

hmmm interesting one aye, for example you can stretch a rubber band and let it retract all dy and its sweet, but if you leave the same rubber band half stretched for an hour or so and not let it retract, when you take it off its just not the same it looses some of its stretch and gets longer, obviously towing shouldn't of had much pressure or force on the strap compared to a snatch but then again its built for snatching and not towing, i think its still sweet but ill keep it as my back up and not snatch any nissans with it

I was with Jungle when we were told this. He means if you have several attempts at recovering someone (or tow someone with the strap streching and retracting) the snatch strap will heat up and may deform.

I meant a duty cycle. About five pulls then let it cool down and loose the built up heat.

I know climbing ropes have a finite amount of times you can fall with it before they suggest you replace it. That may be something different.

Last person i towed with a snatch strap across town drove over it and tore it in half. My own fault i suppose. If your towing someone then its your responsibility when it all goes wrong.

na if your being towed its up to you to brake and keep the strap tight, the guy doing the towing can't do anything about it

i will only tow people that know how to be towed for the same reason, and the tow rope was the good workshop one which i had to replace because the moron diddnt know to keep the rope tight at all times

with someone who knows what they are doing towing is super easy and nothing to stress about but there's nothing worse than someone who doesn't ya pretty much end up snatching them all the way, i always prefer to have the less experianced person do the towing, ya can pretty much control most things from behind
