Oil changes at 6mths?
Oil changes at 6mths?
Can anyone tell me why there is a recommended max time between oil changes? I use my Prado infrequently, (ie ~5000km annually), but I believe diesels recommended to change 6 mthly - why? What happens to the oil if it sits for long periods unused? Or is this aimed at low mileage, long idling situations (ie commuting)?

I own a 2002 Toyota Hiace 3L desiel and only change the oil every 10,000kms (2 months or less) I have now done 450,000 kms and the new Merc desiels get there oil changed every 40,000 kms so I dont think it degrades that much
Now everyone can give me shit cause I own a Toymotor

Is it the 3 litre or the 3 Litre Turbo as the Turbo definitely requires oil changes every 5000km.

Ive got a 1KZTE 7 change oil every 5000 & filter every 10,000,
changing your filter every 5 is a waste of money & time.
Oli filters actually become more efficient as they become more blocked as they then remove smaller particles.
What is filter efficiency?
The percentage of dirt that a filter removes. The filter paper or 'media' determines what the oil, air or fuel has to pass through and where the dirt is trapped. The more twists and turns a particle of dirt has to take, the more likely it is to be captured.
The higher the efficiency, the higher the % of dirt retained by the filter. Filters are least efficient when new and become most efficient just before "plugging".

That is partly true because "plugging" would decrease the flow rate and volume through the same surface. So a completely plugged filter would be brilliant at blocking smaller objects, but would starve the engine of sufficient flow of oil. Finding a balance between is the key.
