Seen a set of tyres on trade me that said had been handcut\regroved Just wondering has anyone done this? if so how and how deep can you go have a set of 31x10.5x15''s with about 3mm tread left offroad only What you guys think about this??

dunno how deep though.. i'd expect just to the same depth as the rest of the tread?
theres plenty of good 31's about though fella.. just get some decent treaded beasties if thats how ya wanna go.....?

Just moved this from off-topic, since its actually quite on-topic... A good tool-shed thread.
The yanks call it tire sipping (said sy-ping I believe)...
I don't know that I would do it to a road-going radial tyre, but offroad crossplys with plenty of meat in the carcass could probably stand 5-6mm of cutting...

Yeah guys like that!! im just thinking of giving it a go till iv got some cash wana go bigger!! 33s maybe? got 2 sets of baldys mite just attack one with disc grinder for a laugh heres the tyres

Try this
Carwells Racing supplies in Christchurch have them. 0800 CARDWELLS. They are called a Heated knife. Tyres cut with them are no longer classed as road legal.
Also, siping is only putting small cuts throught the treads, unlike grooving which removes the rubber.

do they hire them mikeh? any knowledge on $$$?


if you buy a groover get a good brand not a cheapy we use an old one that has been fiddled with so it cuts like a knife through butter, have been doing it for years on rally and wet tyres, as long as no cords or plys show they are legal for rally and rally sprints where the car is road legal, i am going to open up my tyres on my scudo when i can be bothered , they are very handy.
