Just moved this from off-topic, since its actually quite on-topic... A good tool-shed thread.

The yanks call it tire sipping (said sy-ping I believe)...

I don't know that I would do it to a road-going radial tyre, but offroad crossplys with plenty of meat in the carcass could probably stand 5-6mm of cutting...

In Fiji boys collect worn out tyres and get razor blades and cut new tread into them and sell them for road use again!
Sold my 1985, BJ74 MWB Landcruiser, rear locker, 33" MTs, snorkel, PTO winch, solid bars all round, spotties, AM CB etc.
Now just a 1994, 1kz Surf, pretty standard.

Try this

Carwells Racing supplies in Christchurch have them. 0800 CARDWELLS. They are called a Heated knife. Tyres cut with them are no longer classed as road legal.
Also, siping is only putting small cuts throught the treads, unlike grooving which removes the rubber.

From memory they are around the $180 mark. No idea about hireage. I have my own one for speedway use.

if you buy a groover get a good brand not a cheapy we use an old one that has been fiddled with so it cuts like a knife through butter, have been doing it for years on rally and wet tyres, as long as no cords or plys show they are legal for rally and rally sprints where the car is road legal, i am going to open up my tyres on my scudo when i can be bothered , they are very handy.
