Here's the deal on cert....
For steering componints, All welding has to be done by a cert'ed welder and has to be X-rayed, this isn't cheap :!:
Don't panic just yet 8) There are a couple of ways round this, the easyist is to do what DCtecho is doing modify the chassi mounts, firewall etc to "bolt on" another steering system, surprisingly you don't even need to be certed to do this :D
The other option is if you can't find some thing to bolt up then you can get it carved from a solid, no welds no excess costs :D and I do have a mill in my shed  ...

hope this helps

Cheers Reece

ps you might want some wheel spacers to give it a wider foot  with it that tall! keep the pix coming loving it

Cheers for the info guys,

prob the best idea is the fab one up out of bar. Might cut it and put a joining sleeve in and pin it. would run that past a certifier though. I am really happy where the body is and do not want to move anything now and will probably build everything around whats in place. Although don't quote me on that 8)

yeah it was pretty hairy sometimes with a heavy load on on (engine, box and transfer box) had to keep it the momentum up otherwise it would get stuck.......kind of like the old girl when it was running

The progress is looking good.
While you are doing all this work, have you thought about modiying the radius arms for a bit more articulation.

I only bring this up as I found the following link surfing the net for a similar problem with the pajero rear end

http://www.d-90.com/prod/hinge.html

Had a look at this and looks really interesting. I wonder how legal it would be here in nz. Once the truck is up and running and suspension mods start creeping into the picture I might seriously look into it. Nice find!!

Have a look here for an alternative thats a little more likely to be accepted by Mr Cert-guy... Just remove one bolt from the control arm.

This seems to work pretty well on this MU from what he says.

theres an animation about one page down from the top of the screen that shows bolt in vs. bolt out in the 18th Jan 04 segment.

Makes a big difference removing that bolt!! I see where you get your inspiration from Steve  I didn't realise the MUs were such a big wheel base. 97-99 inch. Mine will be 88 Inch :D It will have good ramp over but might dip and bob all over the place more than a 100!

anyway time for a bit of an update:

I have attached the firewall/bulkhead outriggers to the chassis and aligned the rear tub to exactly where I want it. I welded the rear outrigger extension plates on today at work and will put those on the chassis tonight to fasten the rear tub down. I looked into the steering on the weekend and have made a bracket to adapt the RR steering column but as dctecho stated the steering linkages are to short. I need to increase the length of the linkage arm by 140mm (you can see it by the shock tower coming along the chassis rail)
Image

I don't know if this is certifiable or not but I'm thinking Ill cut it and make a sleeve to go over both ends with an interference fit and press together and pin it with a couple of small bolts :?: If thats not certifiable i might just weld it as a temporary measure just so I can drive it on ship.

Time to get back out in the garage.

Just putting it all togeather a the moment and then strip it back again to fully weld outriggers and plate chassis and then back togeather to ship to wellington and then strip again ( ) to paint and finish all fiddly bits!! :D

Hopefully it will be based down here. Might get its test runs in the welly region though and the first year of use/abuse there as well. But after that it should be down here showing the toyotas whos the boss

Another update:

More work was in the rear outriggers than I expected and have finished them. I moved them back to allow room for the fuel tanks to be positioned where I like. Normally the rear tub (rear outriggers) are held with just two sets of bolts on each outrigger and nothing in the middle. I put a piece of ali channel the whole length and and bolted in three spots (extra below spare wheel tie down inside tub) and then same channel bolts to outriggers.

I have taken the series 3 brake booster and master cylinder of the pedal box and adapted the Range rover booster and master cylinder by welding new mounting brackets. Will get some pics in the album soon.

The front bulkhead mounts where the steering box bolts to are to short and do not reach the chassis due to the 2" body lift. I'm in the process of welding extensions on to these tomorrow and will reuse the existing bolts from the series 3 as they are still in mint condition.

stay tuned.

And yet another update:

Returned home for the weekend and on saturday managed to get in the garage for a bit.

Ok finished mounting up the steering. So have taken a range rover steering column and fabbed a bracket to hold it to the firewall.

Image

Then just for a temporary measure welded a chube over the "cut" steering linkage.

Image

finally tacked on the rear tub outriggers to get the tub mounted in position. will take the tub off and put supports to the cross member etc.
Image

So with the steering done, all panels mounted, doors functioning, body lines nice and straight I am one very happy person. I was having such a job lining them up and getting them positioned just right. It's stressful being fussy :x

Here is the final position of everything solidly mounted including temporary roll cage. I have decided on a colour at last that I want. Yellow and black! I saw one in OZ and loved the look of it.

Image

Now all I have to do to get it on the boat to wellington is:

Mount the brake master cylinder and booster -- 30 mins!
plumb the brakes up -- couple of hours
install the radiator -- buggerd if i know how long
wire starting system up
mount fuel tanks
plumb clutch
Fully weld chassis plates, outriggers -- One day of welders time

Heah Mike,

Completly off the subject but I thought I would drop a line an let you know that you stickers are doing the job. The Mrs had a 4WD pull behind her at Uni and asked a whole heap of questions about the site, eg; was a online shop, was it a club or was it where he could get some 4WDing info.

She told him to look at the site (and never come near her again or she would cripple him for life) :chainsaw:

Oh yeah the Mrs (coz she's the real boss) said that it you need a garage you can use ours. Saying that it would be a tight squeeze to do any real work on it while in the garage. It would be fine for storage until you find something better (and bigger) and it's cheap, beer (optional) and a ride when it's finished. Oh yeah you will have to help move some shit around, (5 mins) so it fits

good to see people are taking an interest (in the stickers that is, I wouldnt want to risk getting crippled thats for sure!)

The more people here the better the site gets.....(well i hope so)

Cheers for all the garage hunting stuff. seems like something could eventuate with the dozer yard. well im liking the sound of it anyways. will give you a call soon about. Storage for the old girl in wellington would be out of this world!!!

Pity thinks didn't work out with the dozer yard Mike. I wonder if he buried the Cruiser yet, HA Good Job, Greedy Bugger.

We will have to organise a trip up that valley we went through. I spent the weekend with the owners son before Xmas and he's more than happy to give us access. In fact the whole valley is just a life style block used for recreation.
Anyway I have to go back to the Dozer Yard in the coming weeks for work reasons so I will see if he has any empty stoarge

you trying to get the harmonic balancer off? put a powerbar on it, rest it on the chassis rail and turn the engine over briefly (unplug the fuel pump cutoff polenoid if you're worried about it starting)... ugly but it works. Failing that make a toyota special service tool (bar with two big pins to lock into the pully) to brace it while undoing the nut.

Failing that, do what SupraSurfs did all by itself... strip the keyway so it falls off, then MIG it back on when you're finished :)
