Pto winch mount

Post by Thrupp »

I am thinking about trying to mount my pto winch on my 70 series Landcruiser higher or closer in or both. Has anyone done this before? Is it too big of a job? Any help appreciated. Cheers.

I mounted mine up right back under the grill almost, It was fairly easy cos I had to make a bullbar/winch mount anyway. The LJ/KZJ 70 series have the front x-member further back than the others though.

You probably wont be able to go too much higher without the driveshaft hitting on the x-member, but I have seen a few that have been re mounted a lot further back than stock.

If it breaks, build it stronger.
If it doesn't break, drive it harder.

Being a self-confessedly ignorant newbie, I'm going to add to this and maybe something will happen??? I too would be interested to hear if anyone else went down this path...

I had the same thoughts about height etc., to try and minimise the approach angle thing. It boils down to: if you don't want to move the crossmember, you really need to go over the top...

I've done it, and haven't yet ripped the front off my old girl, but you do need to think carefully about the bracing back to the chassis to spread the torque loads from having the winch so high. You'll also need to move the radiator a gnat's diddle to the right (might need to make up a couple of simple radiator mounts), and 'relieve' a wee bit out of the silly little (and in my case rusted out anyway) box section between the body mounts (how much depends on how far back you want to go). The winch sits over to the left a bit but this is a good point for discussions and adds character... (Also helps level up my saggy springs).

I allowed for as much shear-pin access as I could, from the side. The driveshaft caused a bit of head scratching too, partly because of the winch position but also because I run a V6 Commodore. Just meant getting hold of another winch driveshaft and welding bits together. I used four UJs all up (incl the 2 at the ends), same as std HZJs. During my searches I also found some really grunty looking heavy truck steering shafts / UJs at the wreckers that probably would have done too. The end result needed a tweak in the vice to straighten it a bit, but the results are nearly bloody marvellous.

Yeah, I'll do my best. Everyone knows I struggle with welding, but by comparison, technology and me are locked in an on-going death-battle. Also the kids have pukkled the camera I think. I'm trying to get it sorted.

You've already seen another one of my posts, where I'm considering running the thing backwards. Seriously, the height is my only worry and should be thought about by anyone doing this. Sticking a Nissan winch on the end of the Toyota drive might be another idea. The input shaft spins the same way, but they pull from the bottom. Main trouble is, and it's sizeable for broke buggers like me -- when I bought the Toyota drive, I got a "free" Toyota winch with it. So it sort of makes sense to use it if poss. (Nissan units are lighter too I think)

Cool. Just goes to show I'm not totally lost, coz I just learned something.

hope I don't stuff this up.

Just had a look at it. Bloody amazing. No captions tho' so... Basically, I just tried to show the improvement in approach angle over standard, shearpin access, and a shitty pic of some of the extra bracing. Side bonus is, there might be people out there who are slightly ashamed of the state of their rigs, who, once they see this, will feel shitloads better!
