ORE plug wknd trip

As some of you mayb aware the sheffield mud plug has be posponed due to lack of water.. Now this isnt going to stop the ORE members from having a good weekend 4wding is it ...

so i was thinking of starting at the waipara river and going down stream to the mouth, south on amberly beach and up the kowai River either the north or south branch.. dependent on time north branch is longer .

We can avoid the beach all together and travel on the road to the kowai if prefferd.

thinking of entering the waipara river at the top in the Gorge, here there is some large rocks to navigate around / over.. and from there onwards its relatively easy but of course more "technical" options can be taken.. out on to the beach which can be differcult depending on weather and River conditions, salty lagoons and soft gravel/mud pose a hazzard (well for some anyway

)

kowai River is mainy easy going just some parts of soft gravel not much water, would be a relaxing way to finish the day.

thinking of doing this on the sunday next weekend.. anything welcome aslong as it has recovery hooks/ gear

I'm in, you can be trip leader Adam. Waipara hasn't much water at present so the gorge should be doable.

Is the front factory recovery hook on the Safari ok? Have rated hooks but no time to fit them yet (have one on the back though).

as long as it isn't the tie down point. That hook should look about 3/4" thick> I use the jap factory recovery hooks and I pull big safaris and landcruisers out with it no problems. I have yet to see a factory hook snap or bend, I've snapped some when smashing into rocks. Adam: if you intend on doing the gorge, these guys are going to need snorkels and waterproofed engines, especially if they are petrol. They will also need high breathers for diffs, gearbox and tranny. Just a thought. It's your trip, but I don't really want to be recovering anyone from the gorge.

yea my mates Terano has rated hooks front and rear, lifted, snorkle, he has strops, shovles, first aid kit, fire extinguisher.

And if I have the truck im getting truck by then its all set up by the privious owner, funnly enough it was used in the Sheffield MudPlug 2004 and got 6th.

Adam: also haven't you learnt never to let Time lead as his 35" wheels can take him to places you will never get. I learnt that lesson cpming back down the Godley river from the glacier, got well and truly hung up. Depends on Adam , but we could all meet at the Amberly mobil garage for a leaving time there at EXACTLY 0930.

the guys shouldnt need snorkels should they if the water level is low.. or diff breathers i havnt got them.. if in doubt we can pull them tru dead to be on the safe side.. from what i have seen of the gorge its not that extrem.. mainly rock crawling

yeh amberely petrol station sounds alrite at 0930.. look for ORE pajero, terrano, huge Hilux.

was thinking of it.. phillip, have been so far up it.. thats going upstream from stringers bridge looked prettie thin and there wasnt much water jst some interesting rocks to get over .. have you been throu it ?? whats it like ?

if in doubt we jst skip that bit and go downstream from stringers which ever..

the day can be as long as you like.. if come 2:30 he needs to piss off then cool.. last time i did it that was from highway to beach and then back up to bottom of the gorge took about 4/5 hours with a stop at amberley rocks for lunch..

na havent been through it, been up to it from the highway bridge a few times. we walked/swam through it, it was about 1.5-2m deep (and has a sandy bottom) but may have droped cause it was a while ago. my vehicle will be standard so if you guys want to go through i can meet ya somewhere

What's the decision on the time then Adam. 0930 at the mobil in amberley sounds the go as I know the backroad to stringer's bridge from there so we don't have to go down the highway. Looking forward to it. Just me and the wee boy coming this time.

Trying to get down for the trip, but having probs with the snorkel (taken the piece of sh#t off to try to reseal it.)
Is there still no need for a snorkel, or has the original route changed?
Not too experienced either, does that matter?

if you can get it your snorkel on then do so.. but if worse comes to worse we'll jst be careful with you and if parts are to deep i'll just pull you throu dead... mite be a good idea to bring a tarpolling with you to try and deflect the water from your intake
