Stadia track & Grapevine

Thinking of trying the Stadria track & the Grapevine (Coromadrl) this weekend, or next?. Has eneyone done this befor & is there eneything i should look out for?

yes you will need good tyres and a even better winch with a very long snorkel. either that or good mates to come in to rescue you.

Hi,The Auck club are in there this Sunday ,They are walking the tracks mapping them out using GPS,they will have a couple of trucks driving them also,.I dont know if you are aware of this but people driving Stadia are supposed to pay a fee,I believe if your going all the way up you end up crossing through a couple of Private propertys,If people dont start playing ball and arrange accsess and pay fees to the owners,Dont be supprised if Gates go up...If you contact Peter Vahry on 5240474 he can tell you who you need to contact...Cheers

i thought that the private land was on the neavesville side a few kms past the old battery ? as there are MILES of tracks on the stadia side there would be no need to venture that far over.

if im wrong i have been a bad boy :oops:

and need to start shelling out coins to someone

Do ya think the results of the GPS plotting will be available?? I think i might have to keep an eye on ythe auckland club web site, have been planning a trip in there in the dryer months :wink:

Hi ,From what i understand when you enter the track from behind the metal crash barrier the first 100mtrs or so is Doc land and from there on its private,I think there are 3 owners involved,Ill check with peter or John Walker who both know the owners and history,and post results..Peter and co are trying to check out existing tracks and look for new ones and see if any with a bit of work can be linked or turned into loop tracks.Im sure that any info gained will be available to anyone that wants it...Steve

I just want some inside info on just how bad it realy has got in there. I haven't been there for at least 6 years and that last time was on a bike, nothing looks that bad on a bike :lol:

Apparently its absolutely trashed after being used for the Dennys Winch Challenge though??

i went up to the old battery about 2 years ago, tracks are pretty good, few bogs and mud holes but nothing to dramatic. neat place to go for an adventure :wink:

.... but you do need to have well set up vehicles :twisted:

The Stadia track wasn't trashed by the 04 Denny's Winch Challenge, as that event was set to avoid the large mud holes completely. Yes there are some very serious holes and DOC are highly sensitive about them as they are alongside the stream. Mud going out on the road is a problem too for Transit NZ and they continue to threaten penalties. The owners are probably going to require a gate to manage vehicles and access. That gate will need to be paid for by four wheelers if we wish to continue using the track.

Some sections of the track several kilometres in are narrow cuttings and very soft with buried rocks. There are some dubious stream crossings that were very narrow last time I was in there. A place to be respected.

Steve is right that the first bit is DOC and the rest is in private hands. The good thing is that the owners are willing to allow managed groups in there on request and since they pay the rates etc on their land they ask for a contribution. Given that it is possible to spent a day at least in the area the fee is $25 per vehicle.

The owners have delegated me to collect fees and forward them, as well as advising them who and when groups plan to be on their land. They are not interested in getting calls from all and sundry. Maps are supplied to ensure that users do not intrude into neighbouring property.

The front Stadia block is not large but provides access to the large block behind. The Auckland club are planning to look for possible trails in the front block that might be able to be rebuilt...the area had a stamping battery and pipelines etc.

These lands are considered by many to be open country but they are private and we need to respect that.

Just a caution too on the Stadia area.. we had a 4x4 stolen from virtually under our noses yesterday there! Parked off the road in clear view of the highway and it was stolen and driven towards Tairua/ Whangamata. Green and gold Nissan Patrol with 35 Simex, bullbar, winch, snorkel etc. It was locked.

We'd walked into the bush to look for a way across a stream.
