I'm looking for advise on the best way to improve stability without having to uspset the bank manager.
I've got an FJ40 lifted about 2inches by having the springs reset at the local blacksmith, and extended rear shackles. That gave me enough room to put 35inch Silverstones (M117) under, with a bit of rear guard trimming. Unfortunately, it's much more unstable than it was on the old 31 x 10.5 Hankooks - to the extent that I tipped it over on the first outing.
So what's the best solution? The rims have slightly more backspacing than the hankooks, making the track about 1 inch narrower, which I guess is part of the problem.
Suggestions I've had so far are:
Put on some wheel spacers (quite expensive, and not sure how legal - also extra loading on wheel bearings & axles)
Get more ruthless with the disc grinder - cut away more of the wheel guards, then lower the suspension by shortening the extended shackles & taking a leaf out of the springs (thats a cheap solution, so may do it anyway - but am I likely to break springs if I drop a leaf? - it would also help with articulation)
Replace the rims with less backspacing - not cheap, but could probably sell the rims - I think they are originally off a Nissan.
Comments & recommendations please.....
Thanx
Stability problem - FJ40
;-p
my first start would be to get some goor rims which have offset so you wont need spacers which need certifing.the rims i have are mangels 15x10 purchased from the good guys at 4x4 partsworld for a very reasonable price, the part number for them is
off5106139w (which i have shod with 36" simex's,check my pics)
that will give you a far better wheel track width(you will probably need flares)making you more stable.

If you already know everything, DON'T ask bloody questions!!
