sounds like timing, also every time you adjust mixture you have to adjust cold idle and hot idle afterwards.

I would get the timing right

good luck

It sounds like the timing is a bit out

Follow the cable to the carb, there should be two nuts locking the cable to a metal bracket near the carb, loosen of the nut closest the carb first then wind the other in the same direction until the cable starts to tighten up. Then wind the first nut back up against the bracket to lock everything in place again. It may take a few goes to get it right if you haven't done this before, but its pretty straight forward.

It really sounds like timing, have you tried see where it is timed?

The other thing is check the fuel filter it may need replaceing resticting fuel flow. I would turn the disrtibutor (mark it) 3mm each way from where it is see if it helps (yes its a lot of timing change but saves time)

good luck

You need some special gear to check the timing, either a timing light that works on the HT side or a static timing light that will get it pretty close if you know what your doing. Its a simple job, but you need a timing light really. If it was running fine up untill recently, then it won't be the timing, it doesn't move out all by its self (unless the distributer comes loose  ).

Its more likely something with the carb.

Its possible that your accelerator pump is knackered. Take the air cleaner off so you can see down the barrel of the carb and get ya missus to floor the accelerator pedal while you look down inside the carb, you should see a good strong jet of fuel squirt out into the barrel. If not, its probably time to strip the carb down and clean and rebuild it.

Yes it can but it won't be a straight bolt on job more than likely. You will have to find one you can adapt to fit your intake manifold, then tune the carb to make the engine run how you want it with different jet sizes etc etc. If the jets are wrong, you end worse off either to lean and less power, or to rich and it runs like a bag of poooohs.

The basic idea is to get more fuel and air into the combustion chamber and a bigger carb can help a little bit. You can only go so far with that untill there just isn't the vacum to pull anymore in. Thats why they invented turbo's which push more air through the carbs (in the early days before fuel injection  ) getting more fuel and air into the combustion chamber.

Try a high flow air filter to start with??

I had a SU off a mini cooper S on my 1300. dont know i it increased power much as it was on it when i got it. It was a pain in the arse however. standard acclerator cable didnt work and the remote fuel bulb they have had to have a breather drilled into it so it would work on an angle and it always smelt of fuel on bumpy ground.

Have you got a Haynes manuel. PM me if you dont I'm in kaeo and in keri all the time and can loan you one.

sounds like timing to me but hard to say.
