Safari wheel bearing problems

Post by DaveM »

I had my wheel bearings replaced a few months ago, and have done bugger all driving since.
I'm finding that they are lose after 2-3weeks, so tighten them, only to find the same happens again.

What could be causing this, and it is definately the wheel bearings, and not play somewhere else.

Cheers,
Dave

a few questions to hry to help
1 what tyres are you running and how well balanced are they
2 what condition is the rest of the steering linkages in
3 how hard are your 4x4 outings, do you do a lot of slidlings and big rut work were there is a lot more side preasure on the front wheels

i know in my cruiser i will replace the bearings once a year and will do the steering linkages about the same interval. my 35 crawlers are just horrible on the road ane shake the hell out of the whole system.

1 quick thought is that you arent over tightening the bearing . the bearing sopossed to have a wee bit of play in it

Wheel balance is ok, as is the rest of the steering linkages etc. The bearings were adjusted again 2 weeks ago, and I've done about 200km on road, only running 33's

It could be the bearings running in still?? Unlikely though.

Did you adjust them your self?? If not, pull the free wheel hub off and make sure the locking plate is secured to the bearing adjusting nut with two little phillips head screws on each side. They are a mongrel to line up, so a mechanic might have left em out???

Is it the passengers side the comes loose all the time?? Mine does that and its apparently due to the direction of rotation on that side (anti clockwise) so its always trying to undo the adjuster and loosen the bearing off. Earlier modles didn't have the same locking plate, and they were worse.

I've adjusted them myself (which is probably where the problem lies) and the screws are in the locking plates (drivers side)
Can't quite see why they would loosen like this :?

I've got a couple of spare sets so might have to bite the bullet and get them replaced again

As Mudlva said, a small tiny wee bit of play after you have adjusted them.

The catch is how you get that wee bit of play

You tighten the bearing up fairly tight so there is no play and the wheel does not spin freely (not too tight though, you will damage the bearings), you then back the adjuster off again untill you have some play, then tighten it up again untill you have the tiny tinyest bit of play.

That what you have been doing????

I just for get about my bearings untill the week before a warrant, then grease them all up and adjust them, that way they get inspected every 6 months, and in theory even if they get full of water during that 6mnths, the water proof grease should keep em going untill until next srtrip down.

Saying that hough, i do feel them every time i swap wheels
