Hiya im having probs with my trans i have to take my foot off the gas for it to change gear and im not sure if it even gets to high gear. turning the power button on and off when im taking foot off seems to make it change quicker, the oil is still blood colour and it doesnt slip. if anyone could help me or put in some input that would be excellent i dont wanna have to put in a new box if i dont have to, someone told me about a speed senser but i dunno where abouts that is, and some pipe that goes in to the intake manifold but i cant find that.
Forgot to say it is a Nissan terrano 1988 3L v6

Hi All, I have/had the same problem with my 1991 Nissan Caravan, which uses the TD27 diesel engine - the same as in the Terrano I think. Transmission no. is 4N71B CA51. Had a look underneath and found two vacuum lines which had holes in. Sealed them and took it for a spina dn it started to change into overdrive (finally). Few days later, still elated, took it for another drive and bloody thing wouldn't change into overdrive. Boo.
. Trans fluid is brown and stinks so planing to change it but couldn't see filler (is tucked underneath body). Have read some other forums and looks like you have to fill through dipstick tube. Warku, did you change the fluid and did it help? Dave

filter
you will find the filter when you remove the pan off the bottom of the trans a new filter and gasket is $65.oo from ripco

OK, quick update if anyone has the same problem with autotransmission not changing into overdrive.
It turned out to be the vacuum lines which go from the transmission body, back to the modulator and to the air intake.
The modulator is a diaphragm which is responsible for gear changes. It has a mechnical linkage to the throttle so when the throttle is open or closed, it adjusts the vacuum getting to the transmission.
Intially I had no overdrive and other gears were changing at high revs and were hard changes. I then found a couple of the vacuum lines were damaged and repaired them.
When I then took it for a test drive, the auto transmission was changing into overdrive (albeit still at high revs) but then stopped a couple of days later.
I later found out one of the hose clamps had not been done up enough.
Have just completely changed the trans fluid in the torque converter, pan and the cooler (it was dark brown!), cleaned the filter, and properly connected the vacuum lines and hey presto! all working and soooooo smoothly. Hmmmm. Maybe there is a God
.
For reference, if your auto trans is either not changing into top gear, or changing at very high revs, and changing hard, check the vacuum line out of the transmission and trace right back to the modulator and from the modulator to the air intake.
Btw, if the vacuum lines are filled with transmission fluid, and the van is producing white smoke out of the exhaust, chances are the modulator diaphragm is split and needs replacing.
One other thing; for kiwis, contact "Advanced Automotive & Transmission" at Mnt Maunganui - trans pan gasket 9 bucks vs bloody RIPCO 71 with filter.
