Wellington - Odlins Road
Wellington - Odlins Road
Anyone keen for a trip down Odlins road (Waiotauru Road) sometime in the near future?
Possible camp over in the hut if people are interested.
The idea was raised over the weekend at Terawhiti about adding 5 or so dollars per person to the trip fee to cover food and having a decent dinner and breakfast as part of the trip. That could make the trip fee for this trip $5.00 or so as land access is free. (final trip fee depending on wether the trip will be run as an association trip or not)
Due to the nature of the area (there are no big bog holes or play areas) it may be a case of an early afternoon trip in, spend the night, lazy breakfast and drive out. Unless someone on here is very familiar with the side tracks but from what I have seen of those you need a well set-up truck with winches etc.
Odlins Road doesn't lend itself well to shiny vehicles, bush marks are to be expected. All-terrain or mud tyres are a must as are tow hooks front and rear. There are some moderately challenging bits for fairly stock vehicles like mine due to wash-outs and water damage (deep ruts) in the track. But factory stock vehicles will be able to drive these if driven intelligently.
There are also some huge drop-off's (some approaching 300 metres) where if you fall off........well, you can guess the rest.
Some tight corners will test the steering lock on LWB vehicles.
Also due to the narrow nature of the track and the limited parking space at the hut this trip will not be suitable for large groups. Might have to cap the numbers to between 8-10 vehicles.
The hut itself is not flash, it is a converted bulldozer shed, so there is no running water, toilet is a long-drop outsided with no door (but well away from the hut). But it does have a fireplace, sink, table and chairs and bunks. There is no escaping those who snore and not really enough room outside for tents.....
Is anyone still reading this and interested??

Cloggy, I know the side tracks well and you don't need a winch, tow hooks are a must though front and rear. I don't mind leading the side tracks and you are right, there will be a lot of bush rubbing and maybe the odd bank rub here and there on the side tracks. Let me know the date and I will arrange to be free for that weekend to assist.
ah yes Odlins road, I know a couple of the side tracks, cable is good but gets to serious for my tyres
there is another track, just before the real bad rut section on the main track which is good for a low key bush cruise that ends ... well ... here
cause there is plenty of parking at the hut
And we can have a look past the hut but gotta be careful as a major slip has made part of the track narrow and unstable, could be a prob for some of the wider, heavier vehicles, such as Nissans
oh, and count me in

hmmmm, bulldozer shed or well equipped toilet - big choice

Sold my 1985, BJ74 MWB Landcruiser, rear locker, 33" MTs, snorkel, PTO winch, solid bars all round, spotties, AM CB etc.
Now just a 1994, 1kz Surf, pretty standard.

Still tossing up on the type of accommodation - I'd like a bunk rather than the floor of a dozer shed but not too sure about being in the same room as a long drop and no door......

Whoops, didn't write that too well did I

Good for a laugh though eh. I should also mention that the toilet, although well removed from the hut is only about 15 metres away from the track.
And guess which way it is facing?

Somebody had a sense of humour when they put the damn thing there.

Yes, I used to drive all the way to the swing bridge across what I think is called the Snowy River. But last time I was in there we went past the hut, through the first river crossing to where the river has calved away the bank and track leaving only about 2 metres of track and a good 10 to 15 metre drop straight down into the river. Decided the risk of driving across there is getting just too great (although I have done it 2 or 3 times before).
Some river bed exploring may be called for. Don't know if it passable from where the river crossing is just past the hut to where you used have to use the river bed anyway somewhat further upstream.

please note, the "Bulldozer shed" does have bunk beds of sorts, probably enough to bunk 10-12 peeps with out getting to "personal"
and it has a sink, no running water, a table and a potbelly stove for heat
a home away from home really

Went there yesterday
Hi guys, went up Odlins Road yesterday.
Its been quite chewed up by the looks, even before you get to the small carpark. Some pretty decent ruts.
Coming back down was fun, had the gf almost screaming as she looked out her side window to see the edge of a rut we were in about a foot from her window, I think we were about 1 inch from tipping.
Good fun thats for sure

So any suggestions for a likely date that we could go in there?
Jerry?? You seem to be up to play with the social calender. Where is a window where there are no trips at present?

I'll bloody well invite myself. Beside's I'm sure that you will need me to protect you from any dangerous wildlife that you may find eating your chocolate!!! (or Bubba)
If he's eating your chocolate then he's probably not grabbing your ass......

Hmmm, there is not many free weekends in Jerry's calender is there?
However, my calender is nowhere near that full.
I can do 29-30 September, Labour weekend 20-21 and 22 October, 27-28 October, 3-4 November, 17-18 November
Beyond that is way too far away, doesn't fit in with my "....in the near future." statement when this thread was started.
What are other people's preferences?
