WTD 33 Muds

Post by fweddy »

After a set of 33 MTs.

I understand they will fit to my machine with no further mods (ideally would do a SOA - Any one with experience on that? ideas, cost etc?)

Considering anything in the way of tyres but not wanting to open wallet too far.

Also interested in a set of rims to fit them on so I can keep my other tyres for road use etc.
Sold my 1985, BJ74 MWB Landcruiser, rear locker, 33" MTs, snorkel, PTO winch, solid bars all round, spotties, AM CB etc.
Now just a 1994, 1kz Surf, pretty standard.

Fweddy H2O lover has done a SOA. It is easy you do need to make some spring perches on the top of the axle housing, swap the spring locating pin in the standard leaves to point down (I got new ones when I built my packs for the hilux from a springmaker) get longer shocks and brake lines (or move the hard line) but once done you should be golden.

yes I know 60 series the only thing to watch is your steering up front also while you have the front apart swapping the front spring shakles to the back of the spring is a good idea, they work a little better that way.

Also you want to do a springover on standard sagged springs as they flex well and do not lift the truck too high to become unstable or give issues with driveshaft angles. H2O will be at sheffield (or plan's to be) so you could have a chat to him if the above looks scary, the second truck did a SOA and lifted springs.

Hi Fweedy, I helped H2O out a bit on his SOA. There's 2 ways you can go.

1: Send it in, pay the bill at the end

2: The H2O method 8) It invloves; Cutting off the "under" spring mounts, and making "over" ones, new shock mounts front and rear, buying or making new steering components, double carden joint for the front driveshaft, alter gearbox crossmember to take the d-carden/extra angle, cutting through the weld and turning the ends of the front axle tube (the big ball your hub sits on) due to changing the diff angle (to bring the steering back to normal), and I'm sure there were lots of little things like brake-lines, handbrake cables, bump stops, steering stops.... all sorts of stuff....

But at the end of the day, he runs 35's easily, with no body lift or other suspension mods

Lol thanks guys.

I've tracked down a set of 33s with three good ones and two worn ones which I think I'll go for. The two worn ones will do me for a bit (summer) and I'll keep an eye out for a replacement pair. I can run 33s without modding the suspension or body or soa - leave that for the future when I have more time to hand.

Would you recommend the worn ones to the front or rear? Normally you go best tread to the front for road use but back might be best for traction off road. Ideas?

That's right they were 33x12.5/15 if he had steel rims that would fit I would have taken them but his steels didn't fit and wasn't too keen on the alloys.

Decided to hunt up some other rims and ended up finding a set of 8" white spokes with 33x12.5/15 tyres on them (2 worn) and whole deal better than just the tyres.

Once I get these tyres sorted and add a LSD to compliment my locker I think I can reduce three of the four tows I needed last sunday, the fourth will just need refinement of handling the steering wheel during river crossings! :) Then I'll find some where else to get stuck!

only matters in 4wd, I would go front and when you get new ones put them on the back and move the back forward.

Well I have the 33 MTs now.

They come on rims. Was thinking of using them offroad and still using my 31 RMTs on road, but can't see my self being bothered with changing them all the time. Most likely will end up with 33s on most of the time and perhaps 31s for a long road trip (but that will most likely be for a 4x4 trek to the coast or some thing any way!) and a set of 33s full the load space up in my truck!

Three of them are Durangos - what can you tell me about them? All I know is that they apparently no longer import them. The other two are 2 thirds to 3 quarter worn BFGs which should still do me a while - at least to the end of summer.

Am I likely to have any issues for WOF? Think I might need flares. Do side bars count? I have side bars over my front wheels which will be wider than the tyres or does it need complete flares?
