Hi all,
I have what seems to be diff oil inside a rear brake drum on my 70 series cruiser. I have only pulled the brake drum off so far. Where is the seal ? In the end of the axle housing or is it on the axle ? How do I get the seal out etc...? Any special tools I need ?
Thanks- Pete
Cruiser half Shaft Seal - I think ?
Full floater or semi-floater axle? I'll assume semi-floater - undo the 4 flange nuts and the brake line and handbrake cable, slide the whole axle out (jack that side up a bit to stop the diff oil pouring out), pull the seal out of the end of the axle tube, put a new one in (check your axle shaft for wear where the axle seal sits on it). Then re-assemble
Then you need to clean up the brakes... you can carefully blowtorch the shoes to burn the oil off or just replace them and brakeclean spray everything to get it clean.
Hope that helps
Steve

Hi Steve,
Not sure of whether its semi or full floating ? Don't understand difference ? When I removed the drum it looked as though there was just some flange nuts to undo....
Do i just pry the seal out of the axle tube ? I can't hear any bearing noise when i drive - whether I would or not with the musd tyres I am not sure.
How do I check bearing when I have half shaft out - just spin it and listen or will it feel rough ?
Cheers,
pete

Sounds like a semi floater.
The end of a fully floating axle sticks out through the rim (like the front hubs do). Semi floating axles finish flush with the wheel rim where it bolts on.
Yes just pry it out. They are about 8 bucks from Toyota. Put new one in carefully. Bearings should be noisy or loose if buggered, but it's not that easy to tell. Mine are usually melted to the axle by the time I get around to this part.

hi there i becareful some of the 70's came out with the 60's type diff which means pulling the diff head rear pan off to remove the "C" clips to remove the axles. it will be easy enough to tell as the c clip model, in the brake drum area has 4 nuts that only loosen the brake backing plate only. if this is what you have, then sorry, but start draining the diff. it is not a hard job but it is messy. if it is the later model xcelent as it should be a lot cleaner

that was my understanding that the only way you can get to the semi-floating seals was to remove the cross pin and C clips from the diff and extract the axles....

depending on what year and what toyota was building at the same time. they put in fj45 semifloat, 60's semi float and 80's full floating axles. i have had a hard time doing the rear bearing on my 60 and found that she has fj45 rear diff under her with 60's brakes and diff head. i have a mate at bus n truck and we spent a long time searching through the books to find the axle seal which ment that i also were looking at the 70's section which is were i found out this useless peice of info. funny how little bits of stuf can come in useful sometimes.
