These little trucks are very good standard, five link rear end, constant four wheel drive, independent front axle, good approach and departure angles as well as being cheap to own and maintain and easy to do a two inch lift.
Just need a bigger engine but the later 1.7 inj engines go very well and fiat engines do bolt in but with some mods.

And they had all of these features from the very first model released in 1974. Jap 4x4's where still on leaf springs at that stage. It wasn't until the mid to late eighties that the Japs woke up to the idea that coils and independent front suspension with a nice flexible rear is what the majority of the public wanted in a 4x4.
Niva's were in production without any major modifications to the body or running gear for 25 years. How many other cars or 4x4's can claim that?
I can only think of one, the classic Range Rover.
And while they are not without their faults (no car is) and their build quality leaves something to be desired, they are an awesome little 4x4.
Virtually indestructible, I had one for 14 years and in that time it only once failed to get me home. It travelled everywhere from Bluff to Cape Reinga and just about every place in between. I sold it about 4 years ago and I believe it is still going strong. It is somewhere up Palmerston North or Wanganui way with "Fully Equiped" logos all over it now.
Miss the old beastie sometimes

1992 Land Rover Discovery V8i, 5 speed, 12000lbs winch, Salisbury rear, 110 front, 65mm spring lift, dents in every panel, Rallywoods pinstriping.

So what are you going to do with it now that you are going to Aussie ??
There is no mechanical problem so difficult that it cannot be solved by brute strength and ignorance.
