head to Reefton where we will base ourselves. If we have time we may go through No Name Rd. Two days we can do some more challening tracks around Reefton. We will stay in the Reefton Motor Camp, cabins available, pub within walking distance. Head to Christchurch via Mt Greenland.

Hey Jerry, there's these things called "maps", you look at them, and they show you "roads", and "towns", sometimes even "cities".
I can understand that you've never seen one, they are a pretty new thing......

I'm just teasing you Jerry, I love you really......

Jerry,
I think what they are suggesting is:

Day 1: Morning - Ferry from Wgtn - Picton
Afternoon - Drive to Reefton via Murchison/Springs Junction
Accomodation at Campground
Day 2, 3, 4: Using Reefton as base visit tracks in the area. Let PR fill in the details here.

Day 5: Leave for Christchurch via Mt Greenland and Arthur's Pass

 If Macetown is to be included then it could be better to not go to ChCh, instead drive from Reefton down the West Coast, over Haast Pass to the Central Otago area. That in itself would be a whole day of highway driving.

These South Island residents have been a bit slow in coming forth with a suggested itinerary

Macetown track is just 20 mins from Queenstown. If you did base there, or Alexandra, or Cromwell, It is a bit over 3 hours from Haast to Queenstown at 95 to 100. Driving at 80km/h - what! put your seat forward to reach the pedals! There are a few trips to do out and about that come to mind.

If you were coming this far you'd want to have a day here doing nothing to check out some of the sights.

Macetown (old gold mining relatively straight forward)
Old man range round trip (deep water holes - great for radiators  )
Skippers onto Bullendale then short walk to original hydroelectric power generation in NZ

I know in the past when groups have come a long way and we have hosted them they like to do some more touring trips, going to the places with names like nepoleons hill on the coast, macetown, old man range etc. After all, mud is mud and there is no point going across the country looking for it.

What time of year? I have no desire to read through 4 pages of drivel to look.

I thought stopping in Chch for a day would be good so we can have a game of paintball and shoot mike and PR and Goose (ok maybe not Goose)....and Nibby  and a big ass BBQ or something ..... your missus can take your credit card and go shopping in ChCh  theres that tank driving place there as well then mayby a meal or something at a speights ale house or something (we don't have these in the north island I think) then head down for 2-3 days deeper into hillbilly country and stuff and then back to ChCh for a day and then Ch to Picton?

Or maybe we do that on the way back from a SI loop ie go further down south over haast then to Queenstown for a further 2-3 days for the scenic stuff and then back up to ChCh for a day or 2 and then back to picton?

What sort of Tah's (Tyres) are better suited to the SI, I was thinking of getting a set of good AT's or less aggressive Muddies that are better on the road???...for trips like these

And where are we going to have this hillbillly themed party  can we find a barn

Bump

So are people keen for

Welly > Picton > Reefton > ChCh > Picton ...

or

Welly > Picton > Reefton > Queenstown > ChCh > Picton ...

Can we get an idea of the tracks around each area so we do up a couple of planned schedules and then see which is the most popular????

And Curly told me yesterday that that the West coast was the best place to have the hillbilly/redneck party

SOddenville and Deniston are way cool spots. Don't panic Nibs, we will be going back there sometime in next decade, all you have to do is get Dayglo sorted.

Basically I want to get a list of tracks up for each area so we can do up a rough schedule and then people can pick the best ones and then we can book leave and I can fit my set of airhorns that play "dixie" ....and there might be some orange paint left over I can borrow

I'll keep looking for the books, might have some in a 2nd hand store?

I would definitely recommend these being part of any south island 4wd trip, but if you guys don't make it this far I think I would head north and join the fun anyway :D
