A Community for NZ four wheel drivers

I think perhaps you need to define better what is tech , offtopic and BS, in a community there is a place for everything, maybe you need to be policing the tech threads first as this is where the main complaints seem to be and then offtopic into offtopic and then bullshit and then see how things are... I have heard that you have been guilty along with everyone else of putting a sly comment on a tech thread ... if there is some moderation on these particular threads then this will solve 90% of the problems.

if you are trying to turn ORE into a 4wd tech only forum then that won't work, chatrooms are no use as everyone is not online all of the time..

It used to be very much a 4wd tech sight and it was really good. I wouldn't want to get rid of all the offtopic stuff as alot of it is interesting to read and a little banter is good fun. But alot of it is just people that need to get out of the house from time to time. Think about if people are actually going to give a shit before you write something. (that is aimed towards everyone, not you in particular jerry)

This thread itself is a classic example of "bullshit". Look back up the page and see how many people just post "ditto", or something similar. Whats the point of those posts? Why don't you add something instead of "x2", or "me too"?

Maybe Mike/Steve, you need to add a few more moderators, and just lay down some hard and fast rules. Those that don't like them, then feel free to leave. I joined this site initially for the tech info etc, and agree, that of late, it has turned into something more akin to a trashy tabloid.

Lets get ORE back to how it used to be.

Think its more of a case that peolpe are contributing less and less because of it.

I agree with what steve has said and find myself that i dont contribute as much as i use to as you either get a bullshit reply or thread jacked. I also dont bother reading alot of the trip threads now as i cant be bothered cycling through pages and pages of bullshit trying to find out whats happening.

A little bit of its ok but it reaches a certian point where it gets too much.

Yep so its a case of keeping the tech forums "clean" and then keeping all the "shit" in the offtopic so people can pick and choose what they want without getting upset.

Moderate that strongly and then the rest will fall into place

Why should the moderators have to step in heavily?

Shouldnt this message be enough?

As ORE's largest poster cant you work out where its appropriate to post bullshit and tech?

Halle-freakin-lujah! At least someone got the point... Thanks Dodzee and also thanks Pete and Rok, and anyone else who understands what I'm saying.

I'm not trying to ruin the community, I'm trying to save it - its a 4WDing community...

Oh, and as for those who are leaving or posting less... anyone even notice I wasn't on here for around 6 months recently? And only here a little bit on the 6 months leading up to that? I got pissed off with it a long time back... I'm back on here because I am doing tech, and call it ego, call it stupidity, call it what you like I'm posting my tech. I'm also trying to help keep it all together because I have countless hours of posting and 4WDing invested in this site.

I'm not going to keep trying to justify what I'm saying here... if you think its a dictatorship and not a community then too damn bad. I and others have invested too much time and energy into creating this 'community' to see it go to waste on drivel. The site has grown into a mnster compared to what it was a few years ago... and now I believe it needs some guidelines, if not some hard and fast rules - and as a community we can all discuss those, but there are a few people here who must police them and one who must own them. The final call will come from Mike - its his puppy - so if you think I'm in the wrong then you can always ask his opinion.

this is a common occurence on fourms, they get bigger and problems such as these occur. I have seen several fail, Most the senior members leave, some come back and the fourms are dead for ages, some come back some die.
The ones that dont crash set up very basic rules that everyone abides by.
If your new, tow the line, listen to those that have been around a while. If you been round a while, teach the NooBs.

one of my pet hates and I know several others to is reposts, use the damn search.

Also there is a Bullshit thread in off topic. Half of the off-topic topics could/should be in that thread.

well thats my 10cents worth.

so if the site is going to get a " revamp" with off-topic and the likes moved to a more obscure place, would this hopefully discourage this aforementioned DRIVEL?
and , IMHO, could the search part of this site be a seperate link on front page, since this debate over what is good, what isnt, reposts etc i have been looking deeper into the older posts and HEY!!! lots of my proposed questions were answered, but it took a fair bit of time to find the info... if the search was on the home page maybe more people would use it rather than just reposting?

Good and valid point... the new site will have a better global search function, as part of its core funtionality, than the existing one - although I'm not sure technically if it will be able to search the forum content or just the site content (there is a difference)... I'll check on that - or Mike will be able to comment further. The search on here is, currently, not that good...

I would say that my contribution to the site has dropped off lately because of the exact reasons that Steve has raised, but then I have done this before as well. Ebb and flow really. Things go in a circle and I dare say that the site will probably go all tech now for a little while then back to the general bullshit. In it's current form, I will most likely not visit the site much when the Association site is up and running. But then I really love ORE and am very passionate about it, I would hate to see it turn into dribble.

And others haven't :?: It's not that long ago that ORE was close to extinction.

Personally, I think that the person who starts a thread should have the moderator rights to delete thread jacks and off topic posts as they see fit.

Which may mean sometimes that a thread does turn to crap after the correct answer/info has been given - bit like any conversation.

Now that's a bloody good idea!!
How feasable is it, Mike/Steve? It would make your life a bit easier, and if the thread creator likes a "jokey" comment, they can keep it, otherwise, she's gone!!

Why if someone gets in a good off topic comment does everyone have to get one in? I think self moderation as Steve (Supralux) is suggesting, as far as searching the site I use google in the following format

"rears up front" site:www.offroadexpress.co.nz

this is to cut through the rubbish and find the thread but this tech will be burried in 5 hours :(

you should not need to be a it geek to use the site

Also some form of signing up for a trip (and unsigning) other than posting may help trip threads

I agree with you Steve, my post was to try to get the people like you, Al, Dodzee etc to actually post in here to show that there is a reason they post less.
Just thought it would come across different if you guys posted it rather than someone else
