im looking at getting a early surf need help!!

Post by Windsurfer0206 »

Hi i am new to this site and am looking at getting a Toyota surf here in New Zealand. Am looking at 1988 and before as want the removable rear so i can double it as a ute. i want to be able to do it up for off road trips (slowly) maybe get into some pretty good off road stuff eventually but also want to be able to drive around NZ and not burn a hole in my wallet because of fuel.
have been looking at a diesel as i am quite familiar with them because of living on yachts. and know if taken care of will last forever. which early surf has got the best Toyota diesel?

could you guys help me out with info on what you think is the best early surf? have a max of 2500 to spend on one so will probably have to start out pretty stock.
thanks guys
Chris

If you can try and get one with a beam axle rather that the independant front, (they are getting a little rare now but better for mods) and so long as you were not in to much of a hurry probably the 2.4 d would be my pick, askibg for trouble by saying it but i think they are a bit more realiable than the 2.4 d turbo. Heaps of info on here so look through some of the old posts and go have a look at some trucks and drive them, you'll soon no what you happy with. Keep us updated and keep asking questions

Please refrain from posting multiple times. it not only creates work for the moderators but it actually causes a problem for people reading and responding when the topic is spread over multiple posts.

Heaps of easy mods to do to them.
I've done a few bits to my 84 surf, it goes(soon) great offroad. I love it.

the 2.4 is that down on power you will need manual. Really I would advise if you really wanted an older surf in diesel to look at putting a 1kz 3L turbo diesel into it

did they come in autos? but yea like matt said definately go the manual.
