Fuel Economy '92 SSR-G Hilux Surf

Post by hiluxpilot »

I'm getting around 17L/100 OR 27c a Kilometre OR 350km's off a 60 litre tank (ninety something bucks when using mobils 98 octane) OR slightly worse economy than a Maserati Quattroporte 4.2 V8 or even worse than a super charged V8 Range Rover, obviously with a fraction of the performance ! anyway, whatever way you look at it, it's poor economy :(

Yes, I know the toyota V6 is renowned for this, but some others it seems are getting closer to 400 k's

I have recently replaced the exhaust from front to back with a free flowing system and got rid of the cat converter (didn't touch the manifold)

I am running a standard air filter at present, but after I did the exhaust ($700) and got bugger all improvement, I held back on spending 180 bucks on a K&N for much the same result on a vehicle that is declining in value by the week with fuel costs !

The truck is manual gearbox, regularly serviced and I run mobil's 98 octane. I have heard Gull sell a true high octane fuel i.e. without the octane booster that apparantly evaporates. ???... can anyone confirm this or suggest a better fuel ?

I've owned my surf for over four years (and love it) and and have thrown plenty of money at it trying to keep it in good nick and I reckon it's one of the nicer examples on the road (and it's paid for !) but it's getting to the stage now where, with fuel costs it's a bit of a false economy..

SO, my question is simple, what else is there I can do to get a few extra K's for my money starting with the cheapest, and before anyone says "lighten your foot mate!" I'm a pretty tame driver..but do have to drag my work tools around with me, bout 180 kg's worth I'd say.

what realistically would a lexus conversion going to cost and are they more trouble than they're worth ? I just thought with a fuel management system and better perfomance it might be worth a go 8)

Suggestions please :D

Righto...I wont go on, any ideas appreciated

I havent had mine long, it had corroded head gaskets, I replaced these, had head light skim and valve stem seals replaced. When i reassembled it I disconnected the EGR emission gear, set ign timing, replaced HT leads and replaced last 1.5m of exhaust. I also hve fitted a 16inch electric fan and removed the factory viscous one.
We got 435km 1 tank of 91octane (most over 400 even around town)
Now with all my tools im almost empty and not quite 400km.

I jst remembered I also have very small 235/75/15 tyres. I am putting 32/12.5/15 on soon so will c how this affects. Now this all gets a bit confusing when factory spec 265/70/15 tyres and you get circumference differences so mileage is alwys going to change.

try using 91 the gain if any with 98 is not worth it unless you are running big compression or forced induction,17l 100 k pretty good for a v6 surf .

I can get about 15L per100k on the open road and it uses more in town, not sure of a figure though. K&N filters are good for 4wding as you can clean them and they are not stuffed if you get a little moisture on them. mine didnt change my economy at all.

The head gasket blew after only 5 days of owning it so it had a total rebuild at 76k (under warranty thank god)... now on 140k I've just had the cam belt done, HT leads rotor and dizzy etc. and like I mentioned, the exhaust has been done front to back.

So, two questions, can these trucks run on 91 ??? I have been told by every one I've talked to that the higher octane you run them on the better as in Jap-land where they came from, they spent the first half of their life running on nearly 100 octane that they sell in Japan ?!

and second question, forgive my ignorance, what is the EGR emmision gear ? Is that the same thing as the o2 sensor ? if anyone can clarify the importance of these things, how to connect/disconnect ? it'd be great....I'm no mechanic, just a lowly builder :D cool

I'm running Bf Goodrich 31x10.5x15 so not sure if that is close to the factory spec ? 31 is the imperial diameter right ? 10.5 being the width ? So how are you supposed to compare this to factory spec ? I think I share the confusion :?

Aparently it is close to metric. Last tank I did all round town.
6.5km/L
15L/100km
25cents/km
So not that good but still 381km on that tank. Next tank I mite try 96 and c if better.

After my rebuild years ago, I kept taking it back to my mechanic as it was missing.. when finally he asked what fuel I was running it on, that's when he told me to run it on the high octane as apparently the engine runs more efficiently on the higher octane and although more expensive per litre, he said I would ultimately get better economy. be interested to hear how you go on the 96 after running on the 91
