Good 4wd Start Battery

Post by UBZ »

I have a Winter battery package in the Surf which I have rewired as dual battery setup.

I have been losing voltage from my start battery over night and having to use my AUX battery to start.

After tracing the system I have come to concussion that my start battery is just about stuffed and wont hold charge. :(

Any recommendations on a good high CCA start battery that can take all the abuse I will give it offroad.

Yes, those spiral core type batteries are superb. Have one in my SJ410 to keep us going when spotlighting at low speed with about 600 watts of lighting. Fitted larger alternator and a digital voltmeter to keep an eye on things.

Also have one in the Mazda MPV 4WD - both batteries are 5 years old and still running very well.

I would love to get a Optima Yellow but they are real expensive!

Are there any mid range Gel type battery's that are good for 4x4s??

I have got 2 heavy duty 400CCA batteries in my truck. I was going to go 600CCA batteries but they are about $180 each

Look at the Marine batteries, some of them are built tough and most are high CCA but there are two types of Marine battery one start (the one you want) and one House (long discharge).

I would go for something 11 plate and remember some cheaper battery's have an expected life of 3.5 years so cost over life expectancy is not that massive for the better battery's. (Ask for their expected battery life too)

Sorry but you can't beat the optimas. pay the extra and know you have the best tool for the job. I had one that was dead flat____________________________________ and had been for months. Charged it gently and got years more from it. Try that with any convetional lead acid battery.
cheers matt

Optima is still on the list

The Hella Endurant truck battery that was giving me so much grief has been replaced at no charge by Battery Town :D :D

The battery was charging up fine , would load test fine and then 15mins later flat again. No one could explain it ,so the REP gave me a free one.

go for a 1000 CCA crankmaster or even better go for two of them, then you can power the house/street if there is a power cut
Never argue with an idiot, they drag you down to their level then beat you with experiance!
