The cold 2.8TD issues continue...

Post by dblancer »

Finally took my 2.8TD SWB in to get the cold starting looked at.

Essentially it starts fine, the flow plug light goes on, you hear the "click" of the relay and she starts.
However on cold mornings or at night, it will often sudder quite heavily, so ill apply a little throttle to keep her from being so rough.
I have had it die 4 times while driving soon after starting.
It was weird I was in third accelerating and power simply wasnt happening... it kept dropping to like 2000RPM suddenly all the lights come on and she is dead.

I start her like a flooded engine and she is all good.
She might die upto 2 or so minutes after starting, especially when it cold.

I have taken it to the mechanics.
They have done, a fuel filter.
Changed a glow plug ( one was corroded and couldnt be easily removed, wasnt working too well anyway)
and done a compression check ( it was about 380-400) however he said this was when cold, so not to worry...

I have left with them overnight, they will attempt a start early in the morning.

Im a little worried, they reckoned if it was the fuel pump it would be super costly or even injectors? even suggested it might be worth putting up with at this stage.

Hopefully things will be sorted soon.

It does sound like fuel pump, the injectors would have to fail in a set to do that. It could also be air getting into the fuel lines droping the diesel back to the tank.

i would say your pump needs an overhaul. That is a common problem on 4m40 engine. The seal on the front of the pump leaks and overnight will suck in air causing to die a few times once started in mornings.

I would say the same. My safari had the same problems and it was due to sucking air in the pump.

i,ve done a few of them, but not sure on cost.Think pump is about 7 or 800 on own, plus labour to remove and refit
