My method was a little brutal and irreversible :) But the Hilux axle is so much easier to work on...

I suspect it will be similar tho - remove the manual or auto hubs and look for a big-ass (around 50mm) nut. This will possibly be held by either a metal tab that will need to be bent out of the way or a ring with small machine screws through it. under all that is another nut. while 'wriggling' the hub up and down tighten the nut as tight as you can with your fingers - this should remove all noticeable play. then reassemble and you're done.

This is all from vague memory - it may bear no resemblance to a MU hub at all - but that's the basics for many 4WD front wheel bearing tightenings... should get you looking in the right direction.

You shouldn't have seen the locking washer if you were doing cv's, as it's all behind the locking hub. http://www.clubisuzu.com/images/PDF/repairs/wheelbearings.zip
have a quick look at that, and you'll see the adjuster

Having never seen inside a MU hub, I can't comment BUT, in general terms, this might help someone...

I messed around for a while trying to find a socket that would fit those "bigass" 50mm nuts Hilux / Cruiser style (I know some people just belt them with a bar or cold chisel) -- even tried Toyota but they wanted $170.00  for one. THEN I happened to be in the plumber wholesalers one day and saw a tube socket for hot water cylinder elements for about $35.00 that does the job sweet as. I even got carried away and welded a 16mm nut on the end so I can use a torque wrench if I want to impress someone. Still pricey but I could live with that.
