Hi there, I am quite sick of removing my alternator, pulling it apart, replacing the stuffed parts, putting it back together and reinserting it into my terrano. So............. I want to remove the electrical components (namely the rectifier and regulator) and mount them remotely into the cab of my truck. Obviously I need to leave the brushes and rectifier housings in the alternator, but was wondering if any one had the required info to build these parts and wire them out........Thinking that the cold water rush isn't going to affect electronics mounted in the roof panel.
The info I am looking for diode types and sizes, resistor sizes etc. Have already got a basic external regulator design - perhaps looking for better.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Oh yeah, I am new to this site and live in Chch, have had my Terrano for 3 years - it's takin a hammering and still going strong (except for the alternator thing!!!!)
alternator question.....
You could retro-fit a Hilux ute alternator and external reg into it... they had them factory through till at least 89... just a 6-wire feed to the external reg so you could probably mount it anywhere you like...
Funny that Terrano alternators are so problematic... don't think I've met someone with one that hasn't had problems with theirs... Who are they made by? Or is it just a bad mounting location?

My experience is too many flat batts kill terrano alt. U can get better rectifeirs or rebuild yours. Also u can fit a bosch external RE55 reg if u want. Only 2 wires and never fail. I would leave the rectifier in the alt as it is fan cooled. After fitting many new units I have never had any returns, but maybe none in any serious 4x4 (ie submarines). New units are about $440
Thanks for your help guys, obviously I am trying to avoid spending my hard earned cash but never the less next time it may be necessary (as I am running out of spare parts!!)
I figured out last night that I have nearly no guards left around the engine bay and that this is causing a much larger amount of mud and water spray onto the alternator which is undoubtedly no good, so have installed a shield in an attempt to slow it down (hahahaha)
Never mind I will keep on trucking and will let you all no if I stumble upon a magical solution.
Cheers
