Sheffield Event - Mudplug or Trials?

I reckon a couple of you guys should just do it and get together out at Ricks for a day and peg 2 or 3 hazards out

I dont think Rick would mind, but what would Mrs Rick think of having something that large going on 20 metres from her back door? Mind you, does she need to go home to the mother land to see family??

Rick, start dropping hints now that she "looks like she could do with a trip home......"

I thought the course and hazards were great and mostly well laid out. some marshels made allowences for trucks that could not make the tight turns and only gave 20 points yet others would do ya 100 for going outside the course. By changing into 2wd I made it round some some pegs but then there was the impossiable ones.

My 2 cents is mostly in agreement with the constructive critisims here but with a twist.
Why do they not make you do the obsticals in the reverse direction for the second half of the day?

Mike (SupraSurf) - I agree with parts of what you've said... It is (and was) a fun event - I had fun, lots of people had fun. The Sheffield VFB made money (I assume), which is great.

What I'm saying is that maybe there is room for a new set of rules for a mudplug the way I see in my head a mudplug should be - less tight, more achievable. The cabage tree one would be a good example of one to keep, #8 (which was withdrawn in the afternoon due to the number of rollovers - which anyone looking at it could see was going to happen) is out. A pile of rocks or some other climb-over obstacle would be good and a couple of speed sections... one with a bit of a track rather than there-and-back.

Oh, and reversing for another go would not be allowed - a three point turn to line up would... and as for trucks lining up waiting for the next truck to be dragged out of the bog happened on 2 holes anyway... design is the key I guess... and the only way you'd know if it works is to try it.

So, it seems there are a few keen people - I'm keen to do some of it, Goose can be the legal advisor (god help us all) and Al can be the course tester - if the Terrano gets around it without breaking anything then we need to tighten it up a little

In regards to finding land,how about we go through a charity like the fire brigade, the locals find this or one simular a good cause.
then we set the coures as the members see fit, will all legal issues void
from the ORE, the money will go to a good cause, as most of us just want
a fun day out.
Previous clubs i have been in have benifited from local support,
as it goes back into the local community. just a thought??

I agree there - it needs to be an "all proceeds to charity or a good cause" event - a VFB or a local school to the event - perhaps we can find a country school with a kid whos dad has a farm? Well, something along those lines?

I'd put some prizes in, and I'm sure other local 4WD outfits will (Rick, are ya reading this? ) - and I'm willing to put time and effort into organising and laying it out.

I would like to be very sure of the legal side of things tho... not interested in getting my ass in a sling over it (no-one is I'm sure)...

Also - spectators... it needs to be accessible and advertised... this is where the bulk of the money comes from on the day.

And don't forget max road movements per day - something councils put on some roads which can have a huge cost should you exceed it - I believe a mudplug a couple of years ago had a sticky-beak local sitting out counting cars and reporting to the council - I might be remembering this wrong but I think there was a huge bill thrown at the organisers after the event for breaching the maximum daily limit.

What would be really good would be to have about 5 of these in different locations each year, make it an annual series... or am I getting ahead of myself

You are getting ahead of yourself a little bit, one thing we do want to remember we don't want to Kill the Shefield VFB event, whatever we create has to be that little bit different to what they have and not take away from them.

One way around this is to have a round of events and best points counted in say 3 of 4 events wins the round and including Shefield as an event for those in the round competition. Perhaps we need to choose one area North of Canty, another South of Canterbury, One East (Akaroa way) and leave West as the Shefield event and space them out through the winter to avoid conflicts.

I think it is a good plan and for charity's or entire local communities is a good thing for all, it is a pity about the weather this year but you can't bank on anything.

Lots to think about and organise, and lots of work to be done by a few I offer to help, but have no idea how to plan, organise and run something like this, but would help where I can, most likley a Marshal is my place in the scheme of things.

You could always approch Nev and see if he would be interested in co-organizing a series around the christchurch region helping out local fire stations in the aeras the events are held in that way you will proberley get more farmers holding there hand up to help there local fire station

PS that way if Nev is involved most of the background work is done we can use what he has for sheffield

Just my 2 cents. I think the day was bloody excellent. Im from up in the Naki and we dont have an event like this. Re the Trials vs Mud, my understanding is that there wasnt alot of rain so there couldnt be any mud (on the day it changed yay), so a more tech course was set. Only thing i would change is the backup rule. Should have been say 10 points if you backed up.

I think that overall the day was a sucess and its good to support a local Volly Fire service.

Bring on Next year, ill bring a crew from the Naki.

My brother is a sparky who's boss is based in Amberley. They service the whole waipara, omihi, hawarden, greta valley, area which of course includes lots of farms. But the boss is also part of the Amberley VFB, infact the chief has stood down and he's aiming for that position.

He might be interested in polishing his PR in the fire work and using his sparky contacts with farms to make something happen. His company could also be a sponsor which would help promote his business (all advertising and every entrant has a removable company sticker on the side of their truck)...

i might have a talk to a friend up near the ashley forest. he runs a farm where the vintage car club do there trials on. so has hills, creek beds etc and his farm encompasses the top part of the kowhai river.

I thought it was more a trial than a plug. I knew the conditions were dry so i understand it being tight. I just thought it was WAY to tight. Simple as that.
Though in saying that, there was a shit load of organizing that went into it to pull it off. So I respect that. And it was for a good cause...

I'll be there next year for sure, but I'm hangin for Ricky at 4WD accessories to plan one using Aussy 4X4 rules. He's talking about it. :thumright:

Have put the idea out there. Looks very possible. The bro's boss says that he knows of a customer/farmer that may very well be keen on the idea and has suitable land in the Leithfield (Kowahi river area).

The boss himself would most likely make initial contact and then pass details on to organizers.

Would get the fire brigade on board fairly easy I think since he is a big player in it (esp if cash going their way of course!).

Might be good PR in that area at present but not too close to the Waipara - showing responsible actions of the 4wd community as a serious sport rather than a bunch of hoons.

If interest is still high in this concept let me know when ready and I can get connections made. Would need a dedicated planning team to make it happen.

Bit of most of those entered I think, not all though, we had two cameras there, but only used one, due to the weather.
