prs problem

Post by PigFmr »

not sure where to post this problem i have
i have uniden uho-12sx unit, 10 mths old got it from DSE and i still have recipt just incase its broken

a few weeks ago i was out on a trip i first noticed the problem, was running a bit late so i knew wot channel they where on so called on them was about 5km away i could hear them clear as bell, but they could not hear me untill i was neally there i was only 1km away,so checked all conections and replaced the base and coax with new stuff, but still have the same problem, was a shefield(mudplug) at weekend and called kev(worzel)he was in rangiora so i put the duplex for the repeater could hear him 30km away clear as, but he heard nought from me, all my conections must be good as i can hear people all time,so sent the wife up the road tonight with my 3watt handheld and i was useing my base unit in my truck, she was 4km away coming through clear , but she lost me about 1km away
any help would good before i take it back to DSE to get it replaced
thanks vince

Just a thought

Does your radio have a TX (transmit) power setting. I have a handheld Uniden which has selectable 0.5W, 2W & 5W setting. Your base set may have the same settings. This would shorten your transmission distance if it is on low power.

just a thought as my truck is 24volts and use a inverter for my prs as its 12volts does anybody know how many amps a prs pulls, as a guess it take to more power to transmit than recieve on the prs, this being my problem?

Some PRS radios have sub channels if you are on channel 5 and sub channel 3 you will recieve all channel 5 but to have others recieve they have to be on sub channel 3. took a bit to work that out

I almost replaced one for the same issue before I found that one out usualy you see channel and then a small number if you have it anyone with a normal radio sends and recieves on channel 0

What model is it?

sorry had a guy look  the only other thing I can think of is the tx (transmit)amp has gone there is two separate circuits one for recieve one for transmit. Transmit is boosted at the output, recieve is not amplified except for the volume knob.

Another thing worth checking in the antenna mount and the antenna its self
If there is a bad earth (if required ) or if the antenna has taken a hit it may have fractured the connection of the wire to the mount. this is assuming it is one of the modern wire wrapped fiberglass type antenna.
There is no mechanical problem so difficult that it cannot be solved by brute strength and ignorance.
