Battery - Exhaust

Post by NJV6 »

I'm considering freeing up some engine bay space by mounting either one or both batteries (once I Macgyver the 2nd one up) further back under the rear seats.

Thing is there is the main muffler right below it. (about 2inches below).

Will this be detrimental to the battery subjecting it to heat?

Im not sure about the heat..but i dont think it will be any worse than under the bonnet...but the long distance away from the engine could casue some voltage drop. You will have to use some real big cables to minimise this.

Distance should be no problem unless its a real drain on the battery normally.

Its common in a lot of hot road and other engine conversions to shift the battery (more space under the bonnet and minis have them in the boot from the factory - not that that is far any way)
Sold my 1985, BJ74 MWB Landcruiser, rear locker, 33" MTs, snorkel, PTO winch, solid bars all round, spotties, AM CB etc.
Now just a 1994, 1kz Surf, pretty standard.

Use welding cables they are high current low los more flexable than sterio ones and heat rated.

As far as the battery under the seats inside the car? the floor usualy has heat shields between the exhaust and muffler

Yea won't be a problem, but leave space for battery boxes you'll find you fail wof's if you don't have them in corect boxes and dont have them mounted correctly, and as stated you'll need pretty large high current rated cable. There are some nice isloating boxes you can buy for under the bonnet so everythings tidy and secure

I figured the distance wouldn't be a problem if I used larger cabling.

Maybe I should mount the compressor in the space and leave batteries up the front.

The biggest drain is by far the winch (450 amps....)

Why do you need to free up space in your engine bay?

A point to consider if the battery is intended to be inside the cab under the rear seats.... is the battery you're using fully sealed (maintance-free)???

i'm sure there would be safety issues using the 'older' style batteries... if you happen to roll your truck (god forbid). Sulfuric acid spraying around the inside of the cab can't be too good for the long term health of the driver (or co-pilot for that matter) :?

Paj's have (had) a rear heater and there is a big tub under the floor. I have removed all the heater assembly and only have a hole there, but still with a frame and top. It'd be sealed from inside but not from the outside without a bit of work.

Go for a Optima dry cell battery? I swear by them. Expensive, but you get what you pay for, the best. 8)

What sort of compressor are you planning on running? im not sure how much they like the water if your planning on it under your bonnet, im sure it wouldn't be a problem if it was an ac pump set up
