I live in Picton and I deal with the local engineering shop they bought the 9500lbs this was going to be used to pull boats a ramp in the sounds , As I said there three models the too top models are water proof the cheaper one is not.

It was the cheaper one that he bought and he striped it down to check it out and gave it the thumbs up said it was as solid as a rock everything was over sized.

I have dealt with this engineering shop for a long time and I respect his judgment I have ordered the waterproof one

One other thing I was at the winch challange at Refton there was one there and I was talking to the owner said he has had no problems

They sound alright. If interested parties were to piggy an order onto your order, would this help out with the cost of freight/customs etc?
For that kind of money winches are almost becoming a disposable piece of equipment.
Keep us posted.

Cheers.

I would have to agree with you there about being disposable  I might have to get one of these, I was looking at one of those come up winches but at over double the price AND no wireless remote I think these are looking better.

Perhaps a bulk order can be done through ore. Just a thought, easy payment to here and one payment to them and one shipment back here, then courier out I guess.

I looked at getting in the outback 12000lbs one but greatwinch would only do them in a mini pallet of 10 for the first order and pallets of 20 and each order there after.

Cost was $250USD landed in NZ plus tax + customs. From memory it worked out to about $400 each winch.

Was going try flick a few through trademe. Although had heard some scary stories from a mate who tried to do something similar (although not with this company or winches) about stuff not turning up after payment was made. And i was skeptical of the quality and decided not to commit to 10.

So I ended up getting the basic (non water proof) 7200lbs model off some guy on trademe for $395, thought id give that the death and if it worked ok then id look at going for the water proofed 12000lbs and putting them on TM.

I figured if the winch is going to live in the back of the truck and the solenoid is going to live under the dash so in theory it shouldnt be drowned in water for an excessive amount of time. Will also spray the winch with a silicon spray where it is bolted together. Although the manual says if water gets inside the motor let it dry out and then it will work again - but i dont particularly want to prove / find this out.

Oh greatwinch do some pretty spiffy hydraulic ones too.

I'd be interested to know if you can order single winches from them. I went through this process a couple of years back and got orders from a heap of people on the site for them so decided to bring 10 in (their minimum order) - problem was when they arrived I got no takers from all those that said they would... which meant I had 10 winches sitting here with no homes

I'd get deposits or pre-payments before you bring a quantity in :)

Oh, and on parts - I would be surprised if you couldn't use parts from other Chinese winches to fix them if you needed to - as many of the winches look the same and are probably all made from the same tooling anyway.

The only problems I have heard people having with the Chinese ones are water-related - strip and waterproof the winch before using it - maybe look at adding breathers and perhaps positively pressurise them with a couple of pounds of air...

I'm definitely keen for one if there's gonna be a bulk buy. If not then I will order individually (depending on the "+duty" cost.

I can check on the + duty costs, we have a customs brokering branch at work,.
From my dealings with importing from china in the past, best to pay the all inclusive freight costs in one hit to the supplier, seems to be the cheapest method, then just worry about the duty and GST at this end, I will run it past our guys here and see what sort of idea on cost they can give me.

Payment to China is always a bit nerve racking, last time I paid $5000.00 US, took a couple of days but all was confirmed, phew :!: :!:

Automotive winches have a duty exclusion. You have to make sure you get the right code for it but your customs broker will do that for you.

So it is the cost of a customs broker (approx $80) and GST only.

Let me get this straight (before I commit myself as this is sounding tempting), if we do a bulk buy of 10 winches then:

- Winch C&F price: NZD 420 per winch
- Plus Custom brokerage portion: NZD 8 (assumign 10 buyers)
- Plus GST: NZD 53.50 per winch

This gives a rough price (bar forex fluctuations) of NZD 481.50. This would not include local freight to get them distributed to whoever ordered from wherever in NZ.

This is for the winch including the wire and accessories shown on the webpage?

I spent a long time on http://www.madeinchina.com and found heaps of winches all the same spec, size, and jazz. Just different stickers from the distributor.

Yep that is correct. - should work out to approx ~$400NZD including gst / broker fee.

It is $250USD Landed per winch. So what ever that works out to plus GST (12.5%) and then yes a portion of the customs broker fee ($8)

And the $80 that the custom broker charges includes freight to someones place / storage if it is in CHCH city.

Definitely interested in one of these:

Looks very similar to the Runva model.
A little while ago I was in contact with Runva with the exact same ideas of importing 1 or 2 winches. Runva will sell you just one winch, no minimum order. Very helpful too. All set to buy one when the road car spat out its ABS system. So the dollars went on fixing that.
My reckoning is that the hydraulic winches should be more reliable. The one and only problem people seem to be having with chinese winches is the electrics / solenoid pack. Not an issue with a hydraulic winch. Plus hydraulics by their very nature require some more exacting standards of assembly. And the motors are generic and usually manufactured by a specialist company and not the winch manufacturer.
Add to that the increased speed, no battery drain and the ability to run all day long (as long as the engine is running) and they seem to be the better deal. The Runva 10000lbs hydraulic winch was going to cost me a shade over NZ$950 landed in NZ. But I had jacked up the freight to piggyback in a container through one of our suppliers at work.
I have sent them an email to get some more info and to see what the cost of one of these is.
