Taieri Rd, Waitawheta
Just wondering how many people have been up here, and how far in you have got/how far can you go?
We've done it a couple of times now, and starting from the 'small car park thing' gone in prob 3-4kms on the main south-heading track, had to turn around due to lack of time.

We have been in a few times,There is a loop track that depending on how many and how well your set up, it could take anywhere from 5 hours to an overnighter to complete the track, there was a nasty slip in there but a bypass has been put in around ,in my opinion if you were to grade Thompsons as say a 5,then after a bit of rain this track would be a 6,We found that unless you have either Ptos or Hyd winches then Anti clockwise is the easier way to go as the big uphill is a killer on electric winches if you dont drive it,Also be carefull leaving tow vehicals parked there as there has been a few parts go missing...

thanks monstr,
is the loop track the one that heads up the hill on the right via a big water filled rutted hole about 1-2 hrs into the south heading track?
we have also taken the north heading track which was quite good, but it comes to a locked gate at one of the cockys farms after about an hour or so.
we've got 2 vitaras with 30' mud tyres, 2" lift kits, 5000lb elec winches, and all the recovery gear.
swampa,
without trying to poach your play spots, do you know any other tracks around there apart from wires/maratoto?
cheers.

Yep That's the track, from there on it can get interesting, some deep water/bog holes and a bit tight in a big truck like a Nissan, especially going through the creek,a few big boulders in the way,If your towing there is a motor camp just over the bridge as you turn of in the gorge, they will let you leave a trailer or two there ,Real nice people, the tracks only 10 mins up the road,You should have no problems in a couple of well set up Zuks. The other good track is the Wires,Peter Vahry and the Auck club are going in there in the next couple of weeks to do some work on the loop track, there cutting back the sides and a digger will be cleaning up some of the track down to the creek,a good track for small trucks but in large ones even with sliders and bars you have to expect some damage...Cheers

It is an awesome track, and the bit to the junction is the easy part! Its 2km from the car park to the fork where the loop starts, and then 8km round the loop.
Beware it does get a lot harder as you get further in, and 8km doesn't sound like far, until you are 4km in, its dark, and your truck has broken down while up to its doors in mud. Ask some of the guys from the manukau club about their adventure in there...
The other area to look at in the Coromandel is the Stadia / Neavesville / grapevine area. Off the Kopu-Hikuai road about half way though. Check with Peter Vahry though about the Stadia as it is private land (although now most of it is owned by a 4wder / quad rider

Hey Ben, Monstr and I have been through this track a few times and I have clocked the trip at 16.4 km start to finish. I agree that it is about 2k to the start of the loop but are you saying its 8k by GPS ? to the far side of the loop ? Going clockwise its 11.5k to the slip, then 5 k to get out. My truck must get a shit load of wheel spin towing N*##%n's Ha Ha .

Those distances were approx. I just double checked, and its 2.2km to the first fork, and another 300m to the bypass junction that heads from the left side of the loop up to the right side of the loop. The loop itself is 8.5km, unless my GPS is lying, so thats 2.5+2.5+8.5 = 13.5km. Add 2.9km of wheelspin and you're right on the money

teamsuzuki wrote:so a whole day to get round the loop? any other advice you can offer to make it around? cheers."
1. Start early.
2. Take food & be prepared to stay overnight in case it turns to sh*t
2. Turn around after you're been going for half the day if you're not more than 6.5km in from the car park.
3. Get bigger tyres.
4. Try again.
5. Go to step 3 & repeat.

Hey Guys,
From the Nelson 4WD club and about 9 of us are doing some tracks in Waikato in Easter 2010. Do you need to arrange access for this track and how do we get to it. Staying in Paeroa and looking at doing Maratoto,Stadia/Neavesville/Grapevine and Thompsons and then a nice trip over 42nd on our way home. Would like to add this to the list incase one of the other options are not available.
