Car Transporter

So I scored a whole pile of reasonably priced (free

) steel. Perfect I thought for making a car transporter. So I have now constructed a basic chassis 1400mmx3800mm. End result is to be able to fit my Terrano on, but as this has a track width of nearly 1800mm still have some work to do.

Thinking goes.....double axle, dual hydraulic brakes, hand brake, jockey wheel, ramps and...oh yeah, a winch to pull my 2.5 ton truck up whenever I need to.(maybe for practice :lol:

)

Where to get my hands on 4 x leaf springs and what type? Also need to get my hands on 4 x disc hubs - preferrably to fit the mags I have laying in the shed (4 stud off a bluebird). Any ideas??

Will probably take me 6 months as I work large hours but oh well. Oh yeah, also want a removeable half height cage so I can ship heaps of stuff on it.

I know this is not a 4wd drive, but a project never the less. When I have reasonable photos of my battle Terrano I will post them on this site to.

Cool tech - theres been a few trailers built on here... and I'm thinking of building one myself.

If you want proper trailer hubs then look at supercheap for budget or Trojan for hugely expensive... C&M trailer spares are somewhere in the middle from memory.

I was looking at using a couple of old Subaru rear axles, as they are complete torsion bar axles and I didn't need full width as I want truck width and to be able to drive up and over the wheel arches. Not sure they would handle the weight tho. Its just a thought

yea I know I've just done this and I get trade at a few places and sad to say there is a joker on there selling very similar stuff, just as heavy and well built as trojan and the other brand

that I can't remember, but he is cheaper than trade

If your interested I made a rocking center spring mount to give the trailer alot more articulation as I was intending to take it a bit off road... all I used was two sets of single 1500kg springs I can post up some pics if you'd like

i will be building a new trailer in the next month or two , it will be a ramp ova type and light as possible for my light suzuki . It will be fully galvanized as I want to be able to wash the truck down on it , much easyier to get under it . So the deck will be bits so spaced channel etc .

I built a tandem axle braked trailer about 6 years ago and and made a center pivot as Reece talks about . Trailer rides well and takes speed bumps much better . I only braked the front axle and had no problems , alas only have about 1300-1500kg on it . I got four falcon front hubs , xf , for $150 from a wrecker including brakes etc . Took them to the general engineering shop and they welded them to some 50mm box for axles for another $150 , so two braked axles for $300

Something else I learn was when you mount your springs etc mount them on a channel or angle that you bolt to the trailer frame , then you can move it to set a good balance with a load on it .
I welded my straight to the chassis and had the wheel middle 10mm back from the trailer middle

. with the drawbar weight its heavy on the front and with a zuk on there its 125 kgs on the coupling . Way over the limits for most japa 4x4's but luckly well under the limit of my rangie and witrh that tounge weight tows like a dream .

I got a braked coupling , jockey wheel and 1000kg galv springs for under $250 from the guy on trade me . Hmm it seems to be all trojan stuff too . The springs are one piece , so no rust between springs , all for my washdown on trailer thing .

recently finished a tandem, braked, tipping and tilt deck trailer. It is primarily for work. But you take the deck off in about 2 minutes and bolt on some out riggers, and I can then transport the wreck around on it. Here's some pics that were taken before it was finished.

and with the truck on it.

just an idea.

Don't make it just wide enough to fit a terrano on. if you get carried away and widen something or buy a wider truk one day then it won't fit.
make it as wide as legally possible, then you can fit lots on it.

mine is 4m x 2m inside deck measurements and it can fit safaris running 10" rims on it.

its just my 2c worth, but I wouldn't want to see ya build something you have to sell when you buy a new truk

First up, I originally though of narrowing the trailer and driving my truck over the wheels but decided that it was beneficial to be able to tow cars etc. As I don't know many cars that have tyres like that it seems unlikely. Your trailer looks good though Rokhound.

SKID, I agree that it is possible I might want a larger truck one day(maybe) Once more I thought about going wider and then I couldn't decide when enough was enough so I called it at 1800 (internal tray)

If I need to get a bigger truck on it I will just ride it over the top of the wheels arches like rokhound

Did some more on it this arvo, tacked on some brackets to get it to the desired width, then damn!!! ran out of rods. The end of that for the weekend I think!!!

Oh well in the end if it's not quite right I will just MODIFY it, thats the fun part anyways! :roll:

There are also plans for a proper flat deck that can bolt on to my trailer chassis. This would be about 50mm lower than the top of the wheel gaurds and be 2m (or so) wide and around 4m long. Then it is normal car transporter size :wink:

Only for tacking it in place (design etc) The mig aint as portable so will do most of it in one go.
