hilux and surf diff swaps?

i have an 85 hilux twincab yn65 with tired sounding diffs
rear has a lot of backlash front one goes grrr when in 4wd
also have a 88 surf ifs in good cond but dead engine
can i swap the whole rear diff and u bolts/plates ? is it wider?
where can i find the ratios?without dismantling?
will my current rear diff head maybe lsd? fit into my front beam axle housing?
ok thats enough questions for a start
any site suggestions for this info welcome

Have a look at the VIN plate on the firewall it will give you the diff codes..from them you can determine what ratio's etc they are.

yep tried that
the surf one is g 285
and that says 8 " diff 4.3 gearing and lsd
the double cab lux one says t h and k no numbers
nz assembled?
not listed on that american site with diff info
any ideas on nz body diff code sites? local toyota dealer?

Your surf rear diff is wider than the hilux one but will bolt into your hilux and give you a better/wider wheel base. You may need to use the surf handbrake cables though.

Your hilux diff ratio is most likely to be 4.5 ratio, possibly 4.88

Am currently in the process of doing the swap for the wider rear axle from a surf. The best option is to do the swap and at the same time do the disk brake conversion. all up probably only costs about $150 for the parts. Cheap as chips and well worth it.
And yes, your diffheads do bolt into the front axle.

rear disc conversion? what discs does it use?for $150?
would the ifs front bits fit for this?
and are any of the other ifs bits any use to me?
may end up wrecking whole surf warrant just ran out motor is dead everything else is tidy and well maintained

scoped most of them and most of the other links to hilux mods
i can almost quote the fricking lvv code from memory too
and every rover v8 tech site on the net
thats why this site is soo good
people actually go yes i did that it works ya need to change these bits too

Most NZ new YN Hiluxes were 4.88 diffs. Your Surf one will be 4.3 which will stuff your gearing all to hell... don't do it, you'll hate it offroad...

4.88's are hard to find these days and getting pricey when you do, making it almost cheaper to go with 4.3's and just upgrade the engine to fix the gearing... not the answer you probably wanted, but there you go

4.88 is lowest gearing
4.3 would be ok
its a rover v8 and seems to pull
and not intending on bigger than 31 tyres
or too hell offroading
would be cool to build a beast but not this truck
does the front ifs diffhead fit into the yn 65 beam axle front case?

no the ifs is smaller. put the ifs rear axel in the solid axel one just swap the diff, get it checked out at the same time, if you want some 4.3's pm me can come up with a deal, use the front hubs to do a wide axel on the front, where are you based, give me a call if ya want

might run these til they die
first on the list is lvv and plates
and then swap the whole rear axle for the width
and buy a 4.3 for the front
and keep the ifs discs for disc rear later on
and the steering box for a crossover sometime
anyone want a 2lt motor running on 3 cyl with good knockin noises
good turbo going cheap

Ransom, I am in Nelson and I have a Surf with a few of these mods, falcon rear springs, supra motor, hilux rear springs up front, wider rear diff etc if you want to come round and have a look.

very busy next few weeks
not in a hurry for the other mods yet
lvv and plates is kinda priority at the moment
my other car is a bicycle
then diff swaps
and then maybe do a few mods later on before another cert
