Question on Dual Transfer Cases

Post by suzolla »

Hi,
I am looking at buying either a Marlin or Trail-Gear dual transfer case adapter. and after a bit of advice.
Both of them say that the 23 spline transfer case is stronger than the 21 spline, what vehicles come with the 23 spline case, are they easily available and how are they recognised as being different to the 21 spline ones.
Also has anyone had experience the the Trail-Gear ones.

Thanks in advance for any comments.

23-spline is the chain drive T/C from memory - which is on the back of the R15x boxes (LN130 surfs onward)

21-spline is the gear-driven common one from G52 and W56 boxes (most utes, and surfs up to '89)

The trail-gear ones are reportedly a bit rough, Jafa got one from memory. He's actually building some... although not sure what his timeframe is.

All NZ gear driven transfer cases are 21 spline, all the chain driven cases are 23 spline.

BUT in the US there was a variant of the R151 5 speed that had a 23 spline gear driven case fitted.

If you're looking to go to a dual setup with std gears in both transfer cases then you'll want the 21 spline adapter.

If you want to nuts now and get a dual plus a set of low gears then there is no harm in going 23 spline. ie 21 spline from transfer 1 into gearbox, 23 spline from transfer 2 into back of transfer 1.

I have done the dual + 23 spline 4.7 gears both purchased from Trail-Gear and I am very happy with the quality and also they had excellent customer support.

Note: If you go to a std set of duals now with 21 splines and then want to get a set of 4.7's for the rear, then get the 21 spline rear gears at a later date. Trail-Gear will replace your rear set of gears if you bust em.. so nothing to worry about :)

Remember the US guys are nutters and thrash their kit alot harder than we currently do. Most important thing is to just DO IT :)
