I've already discovered you need the socket extensions from about three socket sets to get to one of the bolts.
The question is how to physically remove the starter from the engine cavity?
Is it possible? Without removing either the engine or all the manifolds etc?
Starter is playing up and seems to need a whack every so often. Also my batteries are draining and I suspect its the starter doing it - well a good place to start since it has issues. Most likely full of rubbish so need to give it a good clean - if I can get to it.

Just recently had the cruiser in to have starter worked on - was at a bad (busy) time so didn't do it my self and the guys cut my panel work to get the starter out! - not too impressed - obviously also had fuel lines off because when my father went to pick it up for me it died down the road and he called the auto sparky who came down and had to help him find the problem and reprime it!

What did they cut? and why on earth did they remove a fuel line? I would be charging them for the repair of the panel, I presume it was a bash plate?

Was the inner guard - they obviously took it out on top of the chassis into the wheel arch - it is a tempting place to cut. The only reason I can see they did a fuel line was to take it out the top which they must have changed their mind on and gone out the side, when all you have to do is take out the PTO shaft and drop it out the bottom. The hardest part is undoing one of the bolts that holds the starter on which they would have had to have done any way!
Silly thing is as i was driving away from dropping it off there I was thinking I should have told them how to take it out - but as I say it was a busy time for me and they are the "professionals" - hind sight eh!

Well if it was me I would be at least making them replace your inner gaurd as now technically your truck is no longer to a WoF standard. not to mention stones can now get thrown up at high speed and damage your running gear / electrics. Failing that go and smack them all about the head with a brick cause they obviously all have no common sence. If they are a MTA aproved workshop I would send the MTA an email with a pic of the damage and ask if it falls within there best practice guidelines, it is in no way aceptable behavior. I do not mean to rant but I have seen far too much of this kind of mickey mouse back jard hobo workmanship of late. seems nowdays all the backyard panelbeaters have been regulated out of the trade and are now mechanics and auto sparkies......

took a starter out of a 70 series a few weeks ago, cant remember what engine it had but it had a pto winch, I did it by pulling the skid pan off, pto shaft off, then taking the bellhousing to engine brace off, undoing the bolts (the top one required about 3 or 4 extensions),electrical plugs off, and it came out the bottom after twisting it into just the right position.
Can tell it took an hour out, and an hour to put back.

not sure if its the same but my prado has a rubber flap on the left hand side under the wheel arch you take off to get to it, I needed the 3+ extensions to get to the top bolt as well
70 series prado (KZJ78) and 90 Series Prado (KZJ95)
