Yeah, you can hook it up to a battery, short it out to ensure it throws the wheel out and it turns. 2nd hand should be no more then $250. I carry both a spare alternator and starter as these are the tow most likely things to shit themselves out bush and it's a real biatch push starting a safari.

I would go and get a price on a rebuild from a few auto sparkies. It should be significantly less than $1600.

If the pinion/clutch and armature are okay then usually all it will need is a set of bearings, new brushes and new solinoid contacts.

For a full rebuild you could replace the pinion/clutch and get the armature machined and the shoes rewrapped but unless they are needed then it's not worth it.

If you ever want to bench test a starter you must apply a load to the pinion to make sure that the starter is turning with enough power and that the pinion clutch if fitted is working properly.

Clamp the starter in the vice and lever a piece of timber against the bench against the pinion. You should be able to apply a LOT of force to the timber without stopping the pinion.

I am of the opinion that if you know something is going to shit itself soon or looks a bit dodgy then replace it. I go new where I can then buy secondhand and reco it. Just had to replace the water pump, cluthch is all new, the only thing old is the pedal.

These days on most small-medium size vehicles it's cheaper to do a new unit than it is to rebuild the old one. The labour cost is nearly more than the new unit.

$300 sounds a bit steep if it was just to machine the armature and replace one bearing on one starter. A full rebuild should involve more than that as well. No mention of brushes?

These are the prices I got for a starter for my 2.8 Saf

New, genuine, ex japan, $1500

Pinion/clutch assembly, Genuine, new, ex japan, $600

Pinion/clutch assembly aftermarket. $196

Rebuilt starter, exhange, $280

Starter 2nd hand ex wreck, Unable to find as of yet.

(as prices + gst)

So, Ive gone for the exchange option. Its my clutch that has given up, so I may as well pay the extra $80 and get the whole item with a warrenty

And dont hassle me about my 2.8, Id rather have one over a 4.2 any day of the week.

Pretty much always do brushes unless they are nearly new.

Most starters are a two hour job to tear down and rebuild and test.
