tyre rubbing on leaf spring....

Hi
I need help because no one knows what to do.
my left tyre rubs on the leaf spring when in hard lock, i cant get a warant with it like that. How do i fix the problem??

what sort of vehicle mate??... most of them have steering lock bump stoppers that you can adjust to fix that problem, a real mechanic would have spent the 2 minutes and done it for you,, unbelievable how lazy that is,,you must have taken it to the testing station....

and theres nothing wrong with that anyway, its a poormans independant breaking,fantastic off road,encourages the vehicle to pivot around the wheel that has locked on the leaf( set so the back of the tyre binds on the leaf not the front) and turns you quicker, i set mine up like that :D just have to be carefull to set it so that when you turn to lock and pull on it to get the last bit of travel it binds up, not at normal driving lock,,, well, thats how i do it anyway,.

like i said easy to adjust if you have to, just a lock nut and a threaded stop, loosen your lock nut,wind the stopper out a little,test full lock to make sure no rub and tighten the lock nut back up. easy peasy

from your other posts guess we are talking about a sj413 . Does it have standard tyres ? Are the wheels the same ? Vitara wheels can look the same but I believe they have a slightly different backspace . Put the left wheel on the right etc and try again .

Next would be jack it up and take wheels off ( so they dont rub ) and go full one way on steering , count turns to full other way . Come back halve and see where the pitman arm is ( little arm on bottom of steering box ) , do not worry where the steering wheel is . Arm needs to be straight , if not will give you more travel one way .
This is to check that the pitman arm has been put on in the middle of the travel etc .

Short of that there is not a lot else I can thing of . If you are running 30x9.5 tyres they will probably rub depending on the wheel etc .

I would assume it is on a Suzuki??
I had the same problem but never failed a WOF :shock:

There are possibly a couple of things to do
1. Backspace the rim so the rim moves further out (but that may stick the outside edge of the tyre outside the guards, which will also fail your WOF

2. Put on some road tyres, I would think that is it only the lugs on your muddies that rub, and not the tyre itself

3. And yes you can adjust the steering so it doesnt rub, but then the lock is no where near as good.

Cool three posts at once .

My rangie rubs with the narrow road tyres on but gets a wof at the testing station .

I guess you are more concerned with rubbing on way and not the other .

Scott where can you adjust the steering travel ?

You can adjust the steering lock (cant remember the proper name for it :? ) on the balljoint (where the kingpins etc are)
It is in the factory manual.

Dirty damn job though

Hi its a 1986 sj413, thanks guys for your help. I took the front wheels off only to find that one of the adjustment bolts was missing. I got another one and put it in and then it was all good.

get yourself some early model ford .5 tonne drum brake steelies...this will fix your problem and give an inch more width on each side... i have these on mine, they are cheap and durable....that is if u have ford pickups down there......
