The Project

Post by kiwipete »

Here is just a little something I have wanted to do since the Poulter River trip, when I sustained some damage to my auto tranny sump.
When the time is right, I wil service the auto tranny and remove the dent with a big stick. :wink:

Anyways, on with "THE" project.

The reason; Image

The belly; Image

The steel; Image

The front plate; Image

The welder, here it must be noted that I am a complete amature when it comes to weding; Image

The angle irons;

The welding, part 1;

The welding, part 2;
Image

The angle irons finished, these support the front and rear plates. It is bolted to the 2nd cross member;
Image

The front plate drilled, I even managed to find one of those illusive oval drill bits. Realy handy when measurements go astray; Image

The bash plate, top side. It even has some of those oval holes too!;
Image

The bash plate, bottom side. My welding is improving here, believe me! The hardest part was figuring out how to prevent it all warping when welding the angle irons to the plate. The solution was to place the plate on the trolley jack, put some blocks at each end of the plate and jack it up under the truch's tow bar. This put a suficient bow in the metalwork in the direction I wanted, allowing me to tackweld it all together;
Image

The front plate bolted in, just have to make some large (65mm?) holes in it sometime; Image

The finished article; Image

The mess, will I be more organised when I get my new shed? i don't think so somehow; Image

This fella turned up on the dif too, he was a great help with my hole measurements; Image

Here is a shot of the onboard air tank, snuggled neatly behind the spare wheel carrier. There were some minor adjustments made to acomodate it.
I am still waitiing time to get the compressor mounted to the engine, but this is another project for another time;

Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

Cheer guys.
Its a bit of an overkill in places seeing as the plates are 6mm steel and the angle irons are 50x50MM, but what the heck.
a nice engineering chap on Maces Rd cut and bent the steel to shape for me, saved a lot of work my end.
Was a little costly at $140.00 though, but what the heck, i couldnt be botherd shopping around as he was just down the road from me and on my way home.
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

Nice ! :) Keep up the good work Pete, everyone start welding as an amateur... apparently you get better at it by doing more of it... geez... I really should get back out to the shed and practice more myself :)

Yours doesn't look too bad tho... It certainly looks like it will keep the rocks away from the sump... and it even looks like you could support the vehicles weight on it too...

Great job Pete, that spare tyre rack is flash, good idea with the air tank.

Are you going to cap the ends of your angle iron that is running along the bottom of your bash plate? saves it filling with mud etc and also there would be less to catch on if it was capped.

Looking G :D :D D

Yes I will cap the ends one day when I find some scrap metal.
Probably do it when I get the courage to service the tranny...........or an oil change, which ever comes first. :shock:

Thanks Steve, i think you are right re supporting the vehicle too. :wink:

The last weld on the angle irons was the best, just did a straight run with the rod, nice n slow and steady.
Has been 10 odd years since I did any real weding when i built our pool fence with 25mm square box and 10mm dia rods. Prior to that it would have been another 10 yrs when I first started work in an engineering firm, but i wasnt allowed to use the welder when the boss was there.
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.
