Sounds more likely to be the rear diff if it goes away when you take the load off.

Go around and check the engine, gear box, body and crossemember mounts for tightness/condtion.

Loose fly wheel is only heard on turning the vehicle off. You will hear a metallic clunk. Is quite hard to distinguish between all th other noises created as the engine stops.
I would have thought it very unlikely that it would be the fly wheel.

More like a universal joint or gear chatter.

Safari gear box's have horrendous gear chatter, even brand new box's do it.

Are you running 80w-90 gear oil or 75w-90??

The more info you can give the mor likely to get a sensible answer

Cheers,
Pete.

Is it purely speed related, or if you drop a gear or two and do 50k in third does it go away??

Hello Dieselboy thanks for your help.
I havnt had the nissan for long so i trying to get on top of things to fix. i thort the noise was coming from the transfer case as the seal was driping so i had that done last week and the noise still there they put new oil in t/fer case and checked the oil in gear box it was full and clean so sorry i dont no what kind of oil is in it.
The loose rattling noise dose it in 3rd 4th 5th hahahahahahahaha it dose not sound good. you dont hear the noise when off road because driving slower.

Crawl underneath with the wheels chocked and the hand brake off, give the uni's a good wiggle, and pump some greese into them while your under there. then take it for a spin.
Did it make this sound before they did the seal??
They may not have tightened the output flange up properly.

The flywheel would not rattle when driving as it would be under load.
It may quietly knock in neutral with the clutch pedal released, but other wise the only indication is when you switch off.

I would be running 80w-90 in the box, reduces gear chatter alot. doesn't sound like gear chatterthough.

Is the rattle still there when you do 50k/h and put you foot on the clutch??

Is the gear box noisey when in neutral and your foot off the clutch pedal??
Does it go quiet when you put your foot on the pedal??

If you are mechanically inclined, you can take the rear drive shaft off completely and go for a spin in front wheel drive and see if all the noises go away.

That would be my first test to isolate weather its the diff or the gear box.

gear box noise

ok the noise was there be for i had the seal done. when they did the seal they gave it a good greese as well. now...the gear box noise if it is in neutral and just coasting along its quiet or when in gear and foot on the clutch its quiet just seems to be when the load is on.
The rattle is there just about all the time the only time it gos away is when you put your foot on the brak so i had the back wheels off and cleaned up the braks but rattle or grinding noise still there.

Is it quiet ish rattle, only happens on acceleration, does it happen if you gradually incease RPM, without it in gear?

I'm guessing universal joints on the drive shaft. They can make about a thousand different noises.

Just pack them full of greese and take it for a spin, it may stop momentarily.
Then again it may not.

You will feel movement in them wiggleing them by hand if there is any.

Did a lift on my hilux and within weeks I developed a squeal in the rear somewhere. Traced it to a rear U/J which when removed was absolutely buggered (actually fell apart when pressed out). The inside was dry and full of powdered steel and rust. Probably the original one fitted 20 odd years ago. Just check the alighnment of the drive shaft splines before you get it replaced (if that is the problem) as they have to go back together the same way (ballanced) not like the mechanic told me with mine - "nah mate it doesnt matter which way it fits together". HAd some horrendous drive line shudders for a week until I fixed it myself. Wont be going back there.
