muddy wrote:How ya goin with the 5 spd box? I just put one from an FJ60 into my 40. It's about 90mm longer than the old 4 spd, so affects the driveshafts. If you do a rear spring flip, it moves the rear axle back enough so you don't have to shorten the rear driveshaft. It makes the handbrake cable a bit tight though....

I don't want the ride any higher so i won't be doing a rear spring flip. (it won't fit into the garge if it's any higher)
Not sure how long the 70 series boxs are to the 40's but if the driveshaft needs to be shorter that's cool.
Dave at Falsegrave Auto is still looking for a box for me. Looks like they are hard to find (damn it).

Yep. Actually out of a BJ73 Cruiser Med wheel base. Was attached to a 3B diesel. I presume they're the same :? The 90mm longer that Muddy is talking about, is for the 5 gear housing  Its still got the transfer case attached, but can soon seperate if not required.

do you know pete if your 4 speed was out of a diesel or a petrol cruiser,as the petrol one is about 10 spline and the diesel one is about 21 spline and about 30 mm longer on the input shaft

Suggest you have a search through ih8mud.com - there may be a few tricks if you want to mate it to your old transfer case. Try http://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php? ... hlight=h55 - prob a couple of other relevant threads too. Also, if you have the earlier 40 with the rear engine mount on the bell-housing, you will have cross-member problems. If the rear mount is on the gearbox, it should bolt straight up. The gearstick & transfer lever are also mounted further to the rear so there's a need for a bit of creative modification to the floor pan. A rear spring flip doesn't add any height to the truck - just moves the axle rearwards. It needs re-loacated shock mounts, & longer handbrake cable (unless you have a t-case brake), but cheaper than shortening a driveshaft. With the added benefit of longer wheelbase for better hill-climbing & departure angle. Only if you don't mind hacking the rear guards though...

Cheers Jase! But I'm after a gearbox/transfer case off 6 cylinder. But thanks anyway.
Dave at Falsegrave Auto found one for me in Nelson. So hopefully I'll score that one.

Oh and Look what i found for $3500 yesterday!!
I now have a spare FJ40 for parts. It's mint! It's a 1978 LPG model.
Pick it up later today. :bounce:

Sorry dude.
I know what you mean re being to mint for parts. But mine is altered for the LS1 so I'll keep that road worthy and straight looking (eventually). I didn't see any point buying a spare cruiser that's all beaten up and rusty. Ya know what I mean?
So I'll take the straight bits off it and maybe build it up for an event cruiser!? 8) (not road worthy)

I second this - do not wreck it! - it way to tidy for such an undignified death :( - Start a poll and see what the result is

But at the end of the day it yours to do what you like with it, but it would be a shame.

I`m sorry to say this Pete but wreaking that FJ40 seams like a crime against all Cruiser fans

Most of us are trying to get more uasable cruisers out there - not less.

I agree with the fibreglass parts replacement method. 8)

Pete,---- what can I say :?: , I'm sure my thoughts and those of all your ORE brother hood are with you and you family at this very important time in your life.

I have written to the Minister of Justice, spoken to some top Lawyers and spent hours reading through recent cases and the only option I think you have got is------ :-
Get a good Lawyer. Drop the Insanity. An early Guilty plea from MURDER to that of CRIME OF PASSION. Hope for a Sympathetic Judge. Go for trial by Jury and try and stack the Jury with:-

Members of THE WAIPARA RIVER PROTECTION GROUP and topped up by NISSAN OWNERS.

Your only chance of being out of prison from a Ten year sentence with good behaviour in time to drive your beloved 350FJ on NIBBY's 40's first TRIP.

GUILTY OR NOT GUILTY :?: ,

Well. I hear ya all, loud and clear. And i must say. When i drove it home I was saying to myself, "man this thing is tight and straight, hardly rattles, is like new inside, i can't wreck this!". So I'm on the fence with this one. And hearing what you lot think makes me even more undesided.
But the things I don't like about replacing pannels with glass is that it ain't as strong. If i was to put the windscreen flat on the bonnet while offraoding it would flex and crack (the way I drive). And the front guards don't look original, they look lame. i dunno.

so don't wreck it. pleeeeeease.

use the 1st one off road, now that you have started to trash it a bit.

use the 2nd one on road, do it up some more, put ya 35s on it and put another V8 in it.

then you will be the envy of all of us, as opposed to someone we wanna beat down for wrecking a perfectly good 40.

I'm sure there are plenty of others out there for parts.
you could probably sell the 2nd one and make a tidy profit, considering the condition its in.

please don't wreck it.

maybe I have a solution - I'm looking for a truck for my daily driver - The MU is giving me the arse-ache with reliability issues... and I need something I can use as a weekend warrior - and you have such a truck. If you pull it apart then everyone will stick pins in little 'Petefj40' dolls... but if you give it to me (or sell it to me, either way works :P) then I promise to drive it, and maybe modify it a little in my spare time but not so much that I miss out on another years 4WDing then everyone wins :D

See, problem solved. well... apart from the other truck you would be left with thats a little mangled - but hey, thats a whole other problem and it can be solved with copious lengths of 40mm pipe, a bender and a welder :)

Ok.
I might keep the hardtop model and use it on the raining days. I could put 35's on it but I'd have to sort out the leaf springs first.
I do like the fact it's has LPG. It will be the cheaper to run than my other 2 V8's.
Keeping it original is kinda cool I recon. 8)
