When I talked to Wayne (cert guy) about fiddle brakes he said "You can have whatever brakes you like as long as you have a footbrake and a parking brake."

Just thought you all might like to know.

Mighty interesting. Im sure its frowned upon as with hydraulic hand brakes.

I think he might have meant, disc drum, vented solid, size....
I cant see 2 levers that control individual wheels as safe for some random.
You can never underestimate the unpredictability of stupidity and that includes your passengers.

Hey timotheus,

The answer he (cert guy) gave me was directly related to me asking him if individual wheel brakes were ok, I said fiddle brakes, mentioned locking wheels while cornering, he knew exactly what I was talking about.

Regarding having them there for the passenger to pull at 140kph, any passenger can reach the handbrake too, if a passenger wants to be an idiot and kill everyone they can do it in a camry.

As a side note Wayne told me that you can have pretty much anything you want on your dash or "forward of the steering wheel" apparantly there are no rules regarding this area, he even said if you wanted to have a big sharp spike pointing towards you on the dash that would obviously impale you in a crash they can't stop you, you would still get cert..........crazy huh :shock:

Be careful "your fiddle brakes can in no way affect your foot or handbrake" is what he said and told me.

In other words if you have a completley separate brake caliper attached to the same axle and braking the same disc it is ok but if you use ANY of the existing brakes (handbrake or hydraulic brake) system or systems then you will fail as this is a non legal brake modification (can affect the foot or handbrakes operation).

I thought of converting my handbrake to a driveshaft brake on the end of the transfer box (available from the US) making the handbrake cable available in a rear hilux drum, this was acceptable with Wayne as the handbrake was independent and certified and the hydraulic system (foot brake) was also not touched even tho it used the same pad's the brake system is not modified.

The only time I've heard of fiddle brakes being certed is when you have two independant brake systems.

I should have been more clear on that point.........fiddle brakes all good as long as they do not affect the footbrake or handbrake. He said the same thing to me

Oh I think that truck will suprise you all from what I have heard ot is a well capable truck.

I may jump in the shotgun seat PR just in case a rope is needed.

Well chucky has been picked up but there is one small problem....it wont start...there must be some trick to it or something...

Any way...when i turn the key the lights on the dash light up (and voltmeter reads normal) but when i turn it to start there is a click and nothing happens (voltmeter drops to zero). and there is no power going to anything for a while. what do i look for??????

battery is all good, headlights are all go until the click.

starter motor earth maybe??????

Make sure all connections to battery posts are good as well.

Yep sounds like either the engine of chassis earth may have deterioated, the same thing happend to my truck when it sat for a few weeks last xmas.

you can check it with a volt meter of just try some new earth straps on it if you've got something suitable lying around. And stick a bit of grease on the joints.

It could be the starter motor I would give it a tow start (low rpm) and see what happens.

The click is the starter, then the High current bit comes in there may be a short or bad brushes in the motor.

As said above possibly the earth with all the vibrations on the train, but with it not working you can ignore it and study :twisted:

OK grab a set of jumper cables and hook one between the -ve and the engine (any bolt) and see if it starts if it does it is earth if not then look at the starter motor.

Bugger better see if you can turn it over by hand! if it winds over then try above if something fell in (valve etc (Rare but I have seen one)) you don't want to do more damage

I would if it winds over by hand and still won't start on the starter look at a light tow start. Once started you can look at the rest of the truck. I would also have a good look at the starter if it didn't start pull it from the truck and have a look at it Matt4u or Hosehustler most likley would have another startermotor somewhere you could do a deal.

do some study kaney! lol weird that it just dies for a while when you try start it. its like there is something that needs to be reset. kindof like and imobiliser or some thing.

Give the starter motor a whack with the hammer, I've seen people do this for some reason and at least youll feel better even if it does nothing :wink:

its not the click that is the problem its that it only does it once and then all the electrics die for a good minute or so. Weird
