yorick wrote:Thanks Ben, Excellent weekend. Thanks Merc for letting me beat up on the G-Wagen. Thanks everyone else for excellent company.

Lessons learned from the weekend
Lexus's don't fit through Suzuki sized cuts
Tonka 35s don't work in 36" grooves
Daihatsu's slosh for a long time after getting drowned
Sometimes a BSTM8's best-mate is a Zook
The best way to take the shine off a newly painted Suzuki is to throw it on it's side.
Nothing seems impossible when your butt is warm!

and the other lession was "up the bum no babies" " yea.......#### YEA"

Also a manicure can last a whole weekend in the mud without chipping, and Av Gas does freeze in cold weather.

and to add to all the fun we managed to gather $180 which will go to the people that maintain and upgrade the block so that we can use the area.

so ideas on how best to spend it are

digger fuel (they not cheap to run)
dunny ? (nice to have somewhere to crap out there)
BBQ table ? (or would that get trashed ?)

any thoughts ?

Probably better to have a portable on a trailer. DOC insists on composting toilets these days, bloody expensive
wopass wrote:BBQ table ? (or would that get trashed ?)

I reckon a DOC standard type shelter, that's a leanto with a roof with a stainless bench inside and a tank that gets water from the shelter roof set up on a campsite somewheres. If there's a Bully going up there at some stage, levelling an area next to that top skid would be a good thing.

Makes the beer go warm, puts rings in the paint work and it always slides off if you start the motor

Na, I wish, not the Scammel so much as the Kaiser. Those three trucks are three of the Four Recovery wagons I operated when I was in the army (The other one was a Scammell 6x6 with a Rolls Royce motor)

The old Pioneer (I mislabelled that one, it's not an Explorer) did 28 mph flat out. It had a clutch on the thing that was built for big boys not skinny sods like me. I had to have both hands on the steering wheel and heave to get the bastard thing to disengage. Luckily on the road you could start the thing in third skip to fifth then sixth then never have touch it again if you were lucky. Every year at annual camp we had drive it from Papakura to Waiouru. It took two days. Our Worksop got one of the first of the 816s. When it arrived we thought the world had stopped turning and we'd been shifted to heaven. 250 horse Cummins, 6 wheel drive auto diff locks and power divider locks, a heater and a rag top so you could drop the top and the windscreen and look hardcore! :)

The Yanks certainly know how to make a butch looking truck.

I heard that they had rebuilt one of the old Scammells, I didn't know they'd kept an 816 though. As far as I know they were still in service up until only a few years ago. I would suspect my old outfit would have kept one. It was unbeatable for doing track changes on the big Bulldozers in the field. The crane could slew through 270 degrees and it had levelling pads. The Tankies had one at Waiouru but I have a suspicion that's the one that McGintys have got. They upgraded to a tracked recovery wagon and an M113 outfitted as a fitters wagon with a HIAB so they wouldn't have needed it. For Engineer Workshops though, all the work was on heavy earthmoving plant, Bullies Scrapers and such. To them the 816 was a godsend.

Having one strategically parked out at Ngaroma would be most useful. Even if just as an anchor ... they weigh close to 18 tonnes.

Did you see how I brought that nicely back on topic! :D
