80 Series Part Time 4WD Conversion
Any one know anybody thats fitted/runs a Marks Adapters part time 4x4 kit in their 80 series Cruiser??
Kit looks simple enough, gather its a case of dropping the transfer case off the gear box, splitting it on the bench, swaping out what looks like some kind of ring gear for the Marks Adapter replacement part, slapping the free wheel hubs on and hey preseto, no more dragging the front diff round.
Anyone heard anything as to how they perform??
What are they like to fit??

Its more the wear and tear on the front end that i'm tryin to prevent. There's no need for the thing o be full time 4x4, and as there's a kit available, then it will pay for its self in fuel saving and reduction of wear and tear on the front end.

Seeing as i am going to the hassle of organising to get one of the kits sent over, if anyone else is interested in one, it might be an opportunity to get one over for you as well

All up there is the potential to bring in 6 individual kits, two for Wayne, one for me, one for BossHog (Wopass's old man), one for Mike (Dixie) and one for Suzolla(with out the hubs??).

Sorry to be dragging this back from the dead - finally got an answer... and some bad news... and some more bad news

No, thats with the hubs included, they did mention that a lokka could be included for about $450 more...
Either way you need the hubs so I figured unless people had a source of Aisin ones (which are about $450 each from memory) theres no point leaving them out.
Cost-wise that price was based on bringing 4 in - it might get a little cheaper if there was more, but not too much I don't think.

I would be keen for a locker aswell if it wasn't a Lokka brand one. I'll get a Lock Right from the states me thinks
Lokka is made in the same factory as lock-right ? What is it about the lokka you don't like? I've sold s%$tloads of them and never had a problem other than one that was accidentally shipped without one of the spacer rings...

I have been put off by the "talk" that i have "heard" second hand through browsing outerlimits.
Not first hand, and don't know anyone personally that has/is runing one......
So, based on that, i have no justification
But i what i have "heard" is that they are a fully licensed copy of the Lock Right that is actually manufactured in OZ. The second hand reports that i have stubled accross randomly on Outers have been that the grade of material is not as good and are prone to wearing prematurly, and that in some instances the tollerances are not as they should be.
The tollerance issue is most likely to do with the installation and making sure the thrust washers are with in spec's, and that also may have a bearing on the premature wear some have experienced.
So if you reckon plenty of people have run em, and they are all good, then thats fine by me, i'll give one a go and see for my self

had a 5spd vx with a auto locker & part time install kit & mate what a dog to drive!lost all its road handling and didnt notice a big drop in fuel consumption.....those lokkas are terrible in stickshift wagons ive found but fine in a autos... just think of 3tonne gross in the wet,rear drive & a auto lokka not a nice combo
sold that cruiser to my driver & got another vx (24v)auto & love the fulltime system & the elec lockers....alot safer towing crap up to a skid aswell...

Depends what your after IMO.
Its got plenty of power. Running a foam Uni-Filter, 3" straight through Zaust, and don't reckon intercooler "kits" have very good bang for buckage
Better to make up a kit from parts on the cheap.
I want the part time kit to save wear and tear on the drive line. The base modle 80 series comes out standard in OZ with part time 4wheel drive.
Full time is a add on for the up spec'd VX model. They didn't upgrade the front diff components to compensate for full time opperation. They are still that same as what is used on the basic part time modle.
As a result, CV's wear out around the 100'000K mark, the brass bushes knacker out, the drive flanges wear, the axle seals fail etc etc.
That and your driving a front diff all the time on NZ roads that don't require full time 4x4.
Also, of you blow a CV, your screwed. You can't just disengage the hubs and drive home, you gotta replace it. Well, you could take the drive flange off on the side thats blown, take the front drive shaft off, lock the center diff and you would be ok.
Another thing as well, is that its a pretty heavy vehicle, so there is plenty of weight over the rear axle in 2wd, so don't see why it would worse on the road with the part time kit. Its the lighter vehicles that get taily and step out in the wet, especially with a locker in the rear.
May i mention also, that the locker that comes with the part time kit is also to fit the front diff

I'm thinking again about getting a kit but without the hubs as i would rather put on some decent AISIN ones that I have already got, reason I,m thinking about it again is that i am going to OZ in a couple of weeks time so looking to bring on back.
With all the new 80 series owners that seem to be on ORE maybe there are some others that might be keen on a kit, not sure what sort of a deal i could get if there are a few.
For the kit with no hubs it would probably be around $525.
If anyone is interested PM me and I will see if it can be arranged.
