Engine start up, 1st time in a year - advice

Post by mike »

Hi All,

I'm getting to that point where i may start the surf. Need some opinions on fuel situation. It had some dodgy fuel in it mixed with a tank full of good stuff, a year ago. I would like to drain it but I dont know how practical it is it drain 60 litres. I could just pump it all out through the fuel pump, although i imagine that might take a while, and then what do you do with waste fuel?

perhaps i just put a bottle of meths in to dispel the water and burn it?

thoughts?

I think you will find there is a drain bung in the bottom of the tank there is one on the three hilux's and 1 surf I looked under.

if there is no bung then using a syphon hose down the filler would be the next best bet, the pump is way too slow.

The water will settle out of diesel fuel in 24 hours this allows you to pour off the diesel (it floats) and leave a little and the water behind oh and the colder the temp of the diesel the better it separates.

Adding meths will only take up the sitting water not the water in the diesel.

Edit: to add smart remark

Oh does this mean you will be able to tow the rover around yourself now?

Mike how did it go? is it together and running? If not nother thing with a new head or sitting engine you may want to put some oil up the top and down the travelers etc just the first time as there will be no oil there until it starts and the oil pump is running.

Not required but it is nice to do :) I also think I would wind it over by hand (No Glowplugs) to make sure it is timed correctly.

Then we want to see the start up vid you have to outdo Roc now :P
