ford courier fuel system

Post by Heath »

Hey guys,

Been having a few issues with my 2.6 petrol 2wd 1997 courier ute's fuel system. In the mornings or after it has sat for a while the engine fires straigh away and then dies. After cranking for a few seconds it fires up and is fine. if only a short time between starts then there is no problem.

I replaced the fuel lines in the front end (couldnt be bothered with the back end in the rain) and when I removed the old lines they were dry. It appears the fuel system drains back to the tank over an extended period and the only fuel avaliable at start up is what is in the carb.

Fuel flow when started is pretty minimal but seems adequate as I have no running problems (that I know about).

I guess my question is does the fuel system have a non return valve (or something similar) or does the fuel pump act as a non return valve? I assume it has an electrical fuel pump as there is nothing on the block and the fuel line comes from the back. I hear no sounds when I switch on the ignition so either it doesnt work properly or is really quiet.

If the pump is faulty what sort of $$$ am I looking at for a new one?

Hasnt really been a problem apart from the hairy starts at 630 in the morning is annoying for the neighbours and the missus but if I can get it sorted then all the better.

Thanks,

Heath

Yeah a Suzuki toy is on the list but not this year (bloody mortgage...), still next year as the missus says.

My ute is my daily driver, done the one vehicle for two purposes thing and it sux. Cant drive it too hard incase you break it and cant get to work (or home), cant bodge things and see how they work because of the WoF regs and Insurance. so a nice ute to carry spares around in and later on as a tow wagon seemed like a good idea. Not to mention it is waaaaaaaaaaay cheaper than my old hilux with the chev motor to run.

My ute has done 290k and still drive fine, looks not to bad when I can be bothered cleaning it. Just some stone chips and a bit of thin paint here and there to fix and she'll be back to mint cond. Oh yeah and a new steering wheel and gear lever boot to tidy up the inside (Looks like the previous owner chewed on them).

Stupid thing with these later model ford utes is why arent they EFI like the rest of the universe? It's a 97 model, not a model T, why not give it some modern touches? Air con might have been nice considering these tradesman's vehicles operate as office space as well as cabs you would think it almost mandatory. I guess it comes down to optional extras and who owns the ute (owner driver has all the fruit - big company you get the basics)
