buying tints off the net

Post by skid »

we have threadjacked the other topic long enough.

we should carry on here.

Db, do you think its too dark putting the 5% ones on the back.

I've driven some cars at work that have dark tints and on an overcast day they seem hard to look out of.

I thought the legal requirement for the front of every vehicle was 35%

Well, put it this way, 5% you can't see anything through, even with your nose pressed up against the window, the 25% you can see through from about 1ft away, BUT, buggered if i would want anything darker on the front windows, i see why its the legal limit!!!!!!

The down side of the 5% is reversing in the dark, even with 100w high level reverse you still can't see shit, you gotta use the mirrors!!!!!!

5% in front is not legal (anything less than 35 percent is not legal in the front), so that is out of the question.

5% percent in the back is not the objective, just between 20 or 35 percent. Thats what I am considering.

also DB, how did you get 5%.

I went to look at the website and clicked on VX and it only had the option of 35% or 20%.

will they do what ever you ask for or what :?: :?:

i think it is to, but i found 35% to easy for peering eyes, hasnt failed a warrwnt yet on it, or no cops goy snarlly about it, i think the rules for the rear windows are a bit different for commercials and 4wds. what i heard was for cars its so they can see the brake lights of the car ahead of the car with the tints... hope that makes some sense

I had asked the guy and he said he can do whatever I like for the rear, including 5 percent. Front will have to be 35 percent. Apparently he responds by email (doesn't like phones or something).

yep you are right there, the front two windows cannot be darker than 35% and the rest of the vechile can be 5%. the front window sceen cannot be darker than 80ish% (basically nothing)but you are allowed the 100mm strip along the top.

Hi guys, the law for a 4wd is W/S must be 70% (standard) front door glasses can only be 35% with 5% allowed on any other window. The strip across the front W/S can be a 100 mm but MUST follow the shape of the screen and not be put straight across from one side to the other. 8)
PS. Bronze coloured glass give a darker tint than green glass as well so be careful if your worried about seeing out at night. General rule is most(not all) Jap imports came with bronze and nz new was green glass.

If you make the tint too dark you will have trouble seeing out at night.
I had a 39 Ford Pickup & i had to install a switch to turn off the dash lights..without it was real hard to see.

Oops should have put in there too that the cheap tint you buy from TM,Repco and the like are not titanium based so will go purple after awhile ,where as the proper tint guys use the good stuff and this is a lot easier to see thru at night compared to the cheap film. You get what you pay for!!!!

5% is really really dark, i had it on my batty ( all round) and couldnt see f all.... i had my 35% failed on my forester due to the factory bronzing... best to get WOF from a non-testing station cause they tend to be more strick.... or do as i have done and go for a wof on a sunny day and leave the front windows down, helps keep the rest of the inside brighter! I doubt that tint film would stick to plastic glass on the soft top :(

Well, they started doing on later model hardtops on Wranglers. When mine was sold, this was not possible - so either I change the hardtop or use a stick on tint, really hard to decide which I might go..

Straight windscreen in the front of a Wrangler!!! And no its not Jap import, NZ new.

Great advice guys, I think I'll stay away from 5 percent in the rear now. Interior lights I can turn down (dimmer on the dash already installed). So its just a matter of do I want to cut it myself and get the rolls or buy the pre-cut. Regarding life of it, well if I hate it enough being poor quality, I'll just spend a couple of days and take it off.

Trying to save money towards a good battery and then a winch.

XJ, thanks for the photos. Looks nice and clean. You can do the same thing with soft top windows too. Just have to be a bit more careful.

The guy has sent me a photo with all the shades as how they would look for comparison. I think I'll get it in the next couple of days and experiment over the weekend.

or to the young fella

Seriously though, if I do decide to get a soft top, I am getting the tinted window version myself. Then I look at the weather outside and say to myself whats the point....

Thanks for all the advice though.

I tinted the back windows in the safari, can't remember what percentage, was the darkest I could get from repco and I wouldn't do it again. Its way to hard to see behind you at night when trying to reverse. I would struggle to see someone standing behind it even with the reverse and brake lights on, maybe I'm just blind though.

I asked him for 5% and he delivered :P

As for 5% on the rear, i had/have 5% on the shorty on all of the rear windows for privacy when sleeping in it and keeping the band gear hidden when parked in town outside a gig.

Does that job nicely.

Reversing in the dark as mention is tricky. I mounted a 100w high level reverse light and it solved that problem.

I've put 5% on all the windows except the front two windows on the 80 series from mobistint. For what ever reason, its not that bad to reverse in the dark, but it's got a ladder on the back door, so will be getting the high level reverse light as well.

Was gonna get 5% on the front two windows ( you can legally if you have a fire arms licence) but pleased i didn't, the 25% are almost to dark

I recon that the kit is good value, the missus tinted her little 2dr GTI Pulsar which cost her a total of $200 in a couple of roles of tint and a few stuff ups while cutting.

Cutting the shape of the window is a tricky painstaking job. I hate it. Having pre cuts is the shit, you just lube it up and jam it on :D :D
