starter problems

Post by Petemcc »

Not my 4wd but my new boat! A mate and I bought a boat a month ago for $500 and have been slowly getting it ready for the water. The trailer is all done and the motor goes... But we are having starting problems. I charged up the battery but its still not that great. If i try just start it off the battery it just turns over and no more but the negative terminal gets really hot and starts smoking after a while so it is drawing a bit of current! When i try and jump start it with my truck it turns over faster but doesn't get any hotter.

Is the battery just stuffed or is it the starter or something. Weird that its getting so hot! Battery starts the car it came out of ok...

Any ideas?

cheers Pete

What size is the boat motor vs the car the battery came out of ?

Does the Boat motor actually start when you jumper it off another battery ?

What is the condition of the terminal and the clamp ??
The fact that it is getting hot suggests that there is a bad connection here.
There is no mechanical problem so difficult that it cannot be solved by brute strength and ignorance.

If the battery is stuffed then thats fine but i would have thought that if it was really stuffed it wouldn't be able to supply the current to make the cables smoke...

Those old Chrysler motors are duds, i wouldnt be going out far in it. HaHa just jokin. Does it have 2 or 4 little coils running to the spark plugs. Because my mate had same problem, replaced the faulty coil/cdi and no worries it went.
I think the coil packs give it more spark on start up and reduce current once running thats y it would go when you jump start? Pretty much like a ballast resistor.
